Make a non-Turbo Caldina faster?

Hey everyone,

I have a 1998 Toyota Caldina G and I was wondering what (smallish mods) I could do to the engine to make it as fast as possible.

I have replaced the air filter to a pod filter, and am installing NGK Iridium IX spark plugs as my mates say it will make it a litte faster.

RE: TURBO, since I'm a uni student and fuel prices are going thru the roof, I am not keen to turbo it so have decided to modify the engine as much as I can in hopes of making it faster.

Pod filter will probably reduce your power, though it will sound cooler. A decent panel filter in the standard box is about as good as you can do really on the cheap. Plugs won't give any noticeable gains really.

As for engine mods, someone else will have a better idea, but with the relatively low cost of GTT Caldina's, buying a Caldina GTT is probably the most economical way of getting a faster wagon.

All of this is probably no help at all, but what you'll spend making your lower spec caldina fast will be more than what a turbo GTT would cost i'd say. So I reckon either enjoy the wagon you got or save some time and money and just sell it and get a GTT:lol:

Your mates are talking shit.

Plain old copper NGK plugs that cost about $4 each will do the same job as fancy iridium plugs. The only difference is you will get around 30,000 kms out of the coppers (probably the length of your ownership of the car) or 100,000kms for the iridiums. BKR6E will be the plugs for you if its a 3SGE.

Your big heavy wheels will also slow you down and your pod filter will be sucking in hot engine bay air.

Don't waste your money, save it and buy something decent.

it's a family orientated station-wagon, with an economy motor - it isn't really the best car to be modifying to go faster. if you want something quick and cheap on gas get something like a smaller hatch or coupe with a powerful but smaller engine like an Integra, Civic, Corolla FX-GT, Starlet GT, Mirage Cyborg, Golf GTi or VR6 etc.

My gtt gets around 10km/L, driving fairly aggressive. Less gripy types & driving normally you'll get 11km/L easy. They're not as bad as you'd expect & dirt cheap to buy these days. It's probably cheaper to spend a bit more on fuel with a gtt, than all that cash on molding your G.

If you're a student & worried about insurance then maybe look at a bz touring wagon for a good mix of performance, looks & economy.

Other than that - ditch that pod as mentioned & smaller wheels. You've got the exhaust. I don't think there's much else you can do without spending some serious dosh (it'll still be way slower than a gtt though).

Also give your car a really good service. Clean throttle body, good oil, decent fuel. Changing your fuel filter might give you a little extra.

Not going to sell my current Caldina because it suits me fine, although a turbo will be good, on a student budget its just not affordable.


I have told myself since I graduate in a year, I will buy myself a 2007 Caldina GT4 and then I'll have my turbo =D

Haha thanks for the advice. I will lower it, but not to the extent that my current Caldina has been lowered. As for the muffler.. yeah, I'm not sure about that - don't think the muffler would suit the car, although the noise they make is nice lol

Lucky, I get around 7.5km/L and I drive mildly spirited.

You're right, it would need to be lower :lol: Tein adjustables would be the way to go. Or any brand for that matter just not D2s :lol:

And if its turbo then a cannon muffler is ok, but if its NA please keep standard or just a highflow muffler on it

Yep: Autos + loud exhausts = wrong

Don't wreck a caldina gt4 with one. BTW; you aware they only come in auto? That destroyed my plan to get one.
