Alarm with remote start capability

so im looking at getting an alarm with remote start capability. im reading that its fairly hard to get them in new zealand, so importing is the only option.

found this one: Viper 5901 which has good reviews and looks pretty boss.

thoughts? some people say you shouldnt use a remote starter on manual cars, but who leaves their car in gear??

It's just a gimmick IMO. Yet to see an actual real world use for it. Keen to hear why you need one. Most of them have a neutral switch to stop it from starting in gear btw.

I had a viper 791xv in the caldina with remote start.

I paid for a very good install, the alarm was really good. It lasted about 6 years, until the remote died (fell to pieces) and I found it was cheaper to get a new alarm than to replace the remote!

TBH I used remote start only a few times to warm the car up, or cool it down with the A/C, but it is really a gimmick. Great for impressing mates lol.

I wouldn't bother with the transponder - you never hear your remote beeping in you pocket. Much better to pay a bit more and get something with GPS tracking. Hell you could get a second hand iPhone 3GS for $300, set it up with a prepay sim and apple's Find my iPhone service. Instant GPS tracking for your car with no ongoing costs apart from topping up the SIM.

Having two cars with shit handbrakes (Lancia and the SW20) that would be me, anytime i'm parked on a slope they get left in gear just incase. I've seen handbrake cables snap, and in the work carpark there aren't kerbs beside every park so turning the wheel just means it'd hit the car beside you instead of the one in front.

I looked into this too. It's even cheaper to get a basic Android with GPS. The cheapest one with GPS is only $200! Then you get a prepay sim and a suitable(free) app.

And you don't really need to get one with remote start. Even the basic Unidens have a 3rd output off the III button don't they? Wouldn't be hard too hard to use that

the reason id want remote start is to warm the car up in the morning, its totally just a convenience thing. i want to be able to just step out onto my deck and start the car without having to trek through the labyrinth that is my house, go outside, open car, start, go back inside etc etc. lazy! plus an alarm on top of that sounds good to me.

i also like that the remote sounds an alarm if the car alarm goes off.

totally, in fact my car has had the cables snap, but was from my aggressive handbrake yanking!

In short yes. It will be a head ache.
There should be some modules on e-bay to do that for you.
Alternatively you will need some micro controller.
The reason is that the unit must be aware when engine started, there are couple of options:
1) Use tacho signal
2) Use engine oil light and/or voltage sensing in case of diesel without tacho output.
Additionally the alarm should lock the doors when remote start is used and have some logic to shut off the engine if brakes are pressed without key inserted and turned.

No not illegal. But you could run into some serious legal issues if you don't have the proper in gear cut outs.
