Rattle guns on trademe

Hi all

Looking at getting a rattle gun. There's a few 'cheap' options on trademe.
I only want them to speed up undoing or doing up things like wheel nuts and various other big bolts - only to save time. For the last part I'll torque them up like I do now, but would be nice to have some rattle gun speed to start with.

What are peoples thoughts on the cheap rattle guns on trademe vs the ryobi one+ battery impact wrench?

Only for home use, so won't get too much work....

Would be nice to know if anyone has used wither options....

If all you want it for is speed, and not torque, just use your electric drill.

I take it to the track with me, simply to spin off/on 20 wheels nuts quickly, but dont see the need for a rattle gun.

Wouldn't waste my time with a cheap air rattle gun, you'll end up wanting to use it on something tight and be frustrated at it not being able to do it's job.
Some of the battery rattle guns are great though, but again unless you spend good coin they just won't have the grunt.
Reith - would assume you'd want impact to initially loosen off the nuts, unless you have a really grunty drill it'd struggle to overcome the initial torque surely.

Ive always had a softly softly approach when it comes to wheel nuts, I always crack them off and on by hand, and just use the drill to speed things up from there.

I had the pleasure of using one of the Snap On electric rattle guns the last time at Manfeild, and it sure had some kick to it

snap on will be good as you'd expect but over-priced for what you get IMHO.

milwaukee are also not cheap, but more affordable than snap on for a great product. with battery stuff its really a matter of you get what you pay for, particularly when it comes to power and battery life. expect a 1/2 inch battery powered rattle gun that you'd actually want to use to set you back around $600. a couple of the guys have milwaukee at work and they are loud as $&#$%, just fyi.

air powered is cheaper if thats an option.

ignore the torque rating claims on all that battery powered stuff, its advertising guff - apparently its max torque with no load on the gun, and no socket... not sure how or why you'd want to measure that. i had a little 3/8 milwaukee gun which claimed 130nm max torque, but on a 13 or 14mm bolt was able to achieve about 35nm of 'tightness'.

the guy who sold it to me said 'at 130nm it should have no trouble with wheel nuts!'

i was excited cos it was a really compact gun, but obviously had nowhere near enough grunt.

Thanks for the replies. I want to spend around $150. So the $600 Milwuake one is not really an option.

I'm thinking of actually going the Ryobi One+ Impact Wrench route. Least that way I won't have to turn the compressor on just to undo or do up a couple of nuts....

Anyone used these? Their reviews online look pretty good....

I have a 1/4 hex drive ryobi. It's great for what you want. Speeds up the process a lot. I'm always finding uses for it.

I've cut up a 3/8's and 1/2 extensions and put them in the chuck of my regular Ryobi battery drill. Works well but I really want some kind of rattle gun/impact type thing.

My birthday is coming up - might see if the misses will buy me the Ryobi impact wrench. $169 though! ouchies

Happy as! Can buy a kit that comes with three bits to adapt to square drive 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 for about $15 if that

The $169 is just for the driver, no battery or charger!

I spent $500 or so at BNT and got a 400nm Jonnesway (excuse spelling if wrong) for wheel nuts.

Possibly the best thing I've ever purchased, I use it for everything now. I've found one bolt so far that defeated it.

Also being massively overpowered for wheel nuts means it doesn't even notice doing up wheel nuts, which means if that is all you use it for, you only charge it every few months (and I do a lot of wheel changing at motorsport events).

I have dewalt impact guns,
One of the boys at work has an aeg which is pretty good for the $$
And the other the ryobi, he's had his for 12months in the heavy diesel trade and its still going strong

Im a big fan of keeping to one brand so much easier than rather than having all different battery powered gear and different chargers

Plus the batterys and chargers are priced as if they are made of gold.

yeah decent batteries are expensive, you look in the catalogues and think 'thats a decent price'

but its just for the tool, no battery or charger... which pretty much doubles the price in most cases.

I got the Dewalt DW059 a few years back, bare tool + NiCad came to $300. I just use my RC car charger for it, which gives me a selectable charge rate and a readout of mAh going in each time.

And yeah one of the best purchases I've made in terms of tools. No pissing around slackening wheel nuts before jacking it up, just whizzes them off.

The NiCad does well on wheel nuts and exhaust nuts, but did struggle a little on a 28mm towbar nut. An Li-Ion should give it a bit more grunt.

If it's purely for in your garage i'd go air. Bunnings is showing a Ryobi air one for $99, not farting around with batteries and charges adding to the cost. If you compare the claimed power figures, the air has twice the ooommmmffff.

I have an air impact gun (and most air toys available) at home, and roll battery tools at work all day every day. Each are suited to their roles. Just my2c.

Waiting on a 1/4" impact driver to arrive tomorrow for my Milwaukee kit at work. The accounts lady will not be impressed at all $139+ post from http://www.i-tools.co.nz though, not bad really.

I use a DeWalt 18V Battery rattle gun, it's great. One charge probably changes about 12 wheels before it starts getting tired. I've heard good things about the Milwaukee ones as well.

I have a makita 18v one (bought the rattle gun tool only to go with my drill that came with 2 batteries) not cheap by any means but holy shit how did I ever survive without it

There's 2 problems I see with an air. 1) my little compressor might not be able to power it and 2) If I do go to the track or am away from home, I won't be able to use it...

$99 is tempting though, and in my price range lol
