But i don't know why someone would spend money on a car and then not get insurance. When i got my FX mum said i wasn't allowed it at home unless it had insurance. So glad i got full insurance when 3 months ago someone backed into the front of my car. $800 odd worth of damage.

I'd agree with that. Also I'd go further, and say that I know some 21 year olds who are far more mature in driving behaviour than some 50 year olds that I've met. Maturity is a state of mind, not a number of years.

Not many cars these days are 2v/cyl.
Just limit power to 100hp, and every one will be driving 1.3 vitz/scirion/whatever.

Yep good point i guess theres homework to be done on that side of things,better to say non vetec/mivec or no variable cam timing?
As far as im awear NZ has one of the lowest age limits for getting a licence?
Anyone know of thats correct?

Yes that is correct.
VVTi/VTEC are also economy related, and majority of cars have that.

In past there were imports restrictions and no muppet could afford a car. And in the past majority of cars were boring and underpowered, which sprouted the generation of drivers who have no idea how to handle a car, call themselves safe drivers, block right lanes and are generally incompetent. In contrast now we have newer generation that follows hip-hop culture and generally misbehaving, because previous generation got it too easy (nothing to do with driving) and didn't pay much attention on bringing up this generation.

If you follow hip-hop culture and pretend to be African-American you are complete retard and should not have licence, and should not breed more morons.

The problem is monkey sees - monkey does. When I saw fast and the furious, when I came out of theatre I though the movie was stupid. Majority of viewers thought it would be cool to recreate the scenes in there.

Also setting up documentary and generally giving attention to so called "boy-racers" is really bad idea. They will purposely do bad thing for attention. All these hip-hop idiots are attention whores. Why else would you wear 2 sizes larger pants that are falling off and baseball cap on the side?

Problem is not the "boy racers". Boy racers are just one side of hip-hop-gansta culture. They do it for the thrill as well. Same sort of people would beat up random people for "initiation".

my first car was a power house 84 mitsi mirage with the power and eco lever
couldnt get into trouble if i tried
slowly upgraded from there..........hell i didnt even get my first f/i car intill i was 21

but yes parents are to blame, buy going garrentor on loans or signing the hire purchase papers
when i was younger i was always gutted seeing all these young people driving high end evos/wrx skylines etc, while i was dorrting around in my gtz whle bulidng other things slowly

another part of the story is listienng to the " older " generation and there sory telling antic's
but the cars that were had in the late 60s/70 early 80s you could easily get away with loonie stuff.........99% of the time you could hit a tree........bounce off and countine with your trip ( has a far fetched example ), couldnt do that now days and the cars we have today

all for comp 3rd party insurance and a power cap of around 1600cc
another thing to consider is a proper drivers training coarse, not this sit down and watch a video b/s, but a poper through you in a car and teach you skills

just something else i would like to share is my brother

hes is 16, and me and him have bulit up a aw11 over the last yr and a half

its not much, just a good healthy 4age, some black top headers and an lsd
thats it

all his mates around the same age, have got s14/15'silvias and r32 skylines all 2L n/a and some turbo

now what sets my brother apart from his mates, is the fact he learnt how to drive/handle a car by doing car club events, like grass kahnas, and some track events
and is a very sensible driver on the road ( lol i have stalked him in my work ute......lol spying )

all his mates have crashed/written off there cars lost there licences
my brother hasnt
i do hope it stays that way, but thats his call

that and my brother has to work hard to PAY FOR HIS OWN PARTS FOR HIS OWN CAR, were as alot ( not all ) have there parents open there wallets for stuff, so its not there money they are wasting
its a different story when its your own money :wink:

Was just about to say, having to pay for things on his own mite curb the sillyness behind the wheel. Its all to easy to finance a car these days,

The AW would more than likely own his mates cars on the track too :D

Yeh, I definitly learnt that when it comes to road cars, if you paid for the parts, you appreciate them and look afte them more.

45hp is more than sufficient to get you in trouble! My 1.3L rwd Lancer had a factory claimed 40ps :lol:

I still managed to roll my 1.2L 4 speed 1974 Vauxhall Viva when I was 17. Had it landed a metre more across the road Id probably be in a worse off situation :lol:

The power of a car has no bearing on whether or not someone will drive it sensibly, the person driving it does. Just as the age of the person driving has no bearing on whether or not they are suitable to be driving.
Everyone wants to fix the problems, but introducing lots of extra rules and regulation wont make any difference to the problem drivers.

Education & culture change are the only way... some call it social engineering.

I would be happier with a really long driving test and psychiatric evaluation before being able to drive "solo". That will mean everyone who wants to drive that is suitable to do so will get a license and be able to drive anything without being limited by a bunch of badly targeted rules that seemed to meet the fashionable majority opinon of the time.

ok this sounds like a fairly simple solution to me (well would help anyway)

just get everyone say below 21 who wants to drive a high powered car (turbo, v8, rotor whatever) and make it complusary to do a decent driving training course run by professionals.

they need to be shown there are consequences if you act like an idiot (not just legal) and you can put yourself in serious danger.

i think this would help the situation. i grew up on a farm and learnt how to drive from age 7. but you still don't learn anything until you get into a bit of s%&* and scare yourself. (i had a *private* 5km gravel road to play on though)

worked well for me i've had 4 cars so far and never put a dent in a single one of them even though i push it on the road a lot (good thing about living in the wops!) i put this down to the fact that i know where the limits are.

my 2 cents :lol:
