Any idea what the ae85/86 ? was doing around the track ?
Any truth to the track being a little faster after renovations (old circuit) something about more angle on the banks.
Any idea what the fastest times were like for the day ?

From my experience the track is flatter and slower. I don't know anyone who has said it's faster. The flatter double apex slows things down a bit now, but I still love the track.

There were no offical times, but I heard rumours of the AE86 doing 45's before it's clutch demise. It wasn't really a day for record breaking as the track was rather cold and didn't aid in tyres warmth for quick times.

Just talked to a very knowledgeable Taupo Car Club man who has said that the new layout is about a 1/2 second slower than the old layout which makes me pretty happy with the 47.96 someone timed me at.
See ya

I bet that times lost through the sweeper, everywhere else seemed 'normal'

Thanks Chelles
I had a great time- the cold weather was fine for me- I was just glad it wasnt raining!

I was perhaps one of the less serious entrants (totally standard car, standard tires) but trackdays are always fun....my only downer was my waterpump springing a leak which meant i couldnt get more than 3 sessions in......

So when is the next one!!!

You are more than welcome. It seems that a lot of people had a mechanical issues on the day. I've counted 8 cars so far. 8O

The next one is at Manfeild on 11th August :D Click in my signature for more details and you'll see a link to the entry form :)

What an awesome day! My best timed lap was 51s or so, I wish I had got my new intercooler in first, you could have roasted turkey on the stocker! Nothing went wrong with my car except an exhaust leak, got some video and pics which I will get up next week sometime. Thankyou again Chelles! :D

And I'll add my vote of thanks - absolutely brilliant day. Very well organised (still not sure how you managed the weather, but well done there) and I'm more than happy with the way the new toy went - even without the VVT in operation

And many thanks to Simon for the drive.

I think the altered sweeper at Taupo "old" track makes lap times quicker!

I haven't changed anything important on my car since last year and I'm sure that I haven't magically become a better driver over the summer!
My best lap time from the old sweeper track was about 47.79.

Dumped the video from Queen's Birthday trackday onto the computer...
My lap times for the last 2 sessions (the only ones I taped dammit):
Session with Chelles as passenger (much laughter and waving of hands)
48.97
53.87
49.98
47.13
47.98
48.04
This session with one of the lads from Napier who spent all day on the pit entry flagpoint - thanks guys.
47.15
47.10
47.02 My previous best on the old sweeper track was 47.79 or something!!!
(Session cut short due to leaking rear brakeline!!!)

The "old track" is a bit shorter now due to the sweeper being reformed in order to give more runoff. Pretty much it is about 3/4 the size that it was. It has a slightly tighter entry but a similar exit. Any comments about "banking" of the old corner... hmmm well I think that the speed around the most banked bit of the old sweeper was too low to get any real benefit from the little banking that was there. The new corner has a much smoother surface so you don't have to back off the brakes on the rough spots like you used to have to do.
I did observe that lots of people where driving a wide entry to the sweeper like many people used to do. I don't think this works as well as it used to. Anyone who followed me or rode with me would have seen I drove a tight, almost straight entry with a double apex. This seems to give the best result for me and my car.

PELO (Chris) seemed to be driving his S/C MR2 very well. Out of the hairpin he went very well (even pulling away by a couple of metres from me).

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

I timed a few of my mates laps in the white ef3 civic running semi's. He put in some pretty consistant 50s laps & managed to dip into the 49s.
I went for a session in the car with him, those tires where impressive to say the least & his late braking was awsome. Neadless to say his front rotors are now warped after all that abuse.
Have to get my a into g next time & get the levin down there. Anyone know what time that BZR was doing? Looked & sounded pretty stock.
Was a very cool day, apart from the freezing wind which gave me a cold!

ROBODISCO_20v, I heard he was in the 49's.

The best time we posted was a 48.2 (however we were only out there for around 20 laps before we had to retire the car) The last time we were at Taupo (March this year) the Mirage managed 46.3 which I was well impressed with. That day was hot and the Toyo tyres were working their heart out for me.
Fingers crossed I can mantain that sort of time for the Manfeild track day. Praying for a warm day and no rain :D

from the video I took my lap times were around the 52 second mark (best of 52.12) which i guess would be a benchmark time for me and my car (92 Mr2 non turbo)........lots of things I could improve in the cars' setup for next time: it is standard and old {186000 kms} -tyres are low quality, suspension is standard, bushes are worn, engine is standard, standard weight, half a tank of gas, my braking needs to be more authorititive etc hehhehe maybe im just making excuses ;)
Its funny: on the street everyone wants more power....on the track everyone wants more brakes :)

Chelles- are you based in Taupo? do you know of any similar days at Taupo that are coming up? (Manfield might be a little far for me in case something goes wrong)

I'm based in Auckland, I just travel everywhere in the North Island to get my fix of track time.

Watch forums like NZ Honda's and MMC as they run track days. I plan to run another one befoer the end of the year. Will keep ya posted :)
