How about a 2001 Allex RS180? 2zzge (1800cc, 140kW) and 6spd. I test drove one a while back, didn't want to give it back! They're so much fun to drive (I know a couple of guys on these forums have had them at track days) and being 5dr hatch still very practical. Very much in your price range as well, I'd suggest taking one for a test drive.

Get him a Carib wagon. With the change, buy him a towball rack and a decent bike

As for the VZR Pulsars, I had one before my current wagon. Got a shade under 300km on the clock before being written off and was waaaaaaaaaaay more sporty(than the auto 1600 I have now)

Some of them have a few little options that were added by the Japanese owners, mine had Nismo S tune suspension and I threw on a pod filter for mad BOOOOOBAAAAAAAAAAAA action driving through town :P

Also +1 to the suggestion of the Allex RS180/Runx Z
17yo getting a decent car! You're a kind dad :)

I remember the first car I had was a pass-me-down manual '89 Suzuki Alto 3cyl. Got the restricted and full on that one!

The Allex/Runx would be my pick too,

just make sure it is the 2ZZGE not the 1ZZGE, ( both 1800cc)

The 2ZZGE are an awesome car to drive ane have plenty of power.

HAHAHAHAHA - Ohhh, that's way more like it.

My Dad told me I had to get out when I turned 18, so I moved out a few weeks before my birthday. Having no money and nobody to support you when you're young is a great thing. You get very creative when you want to be entertained or need food. No regrets.

Good on ya!

It was the right choice, he is going to uni next year and the commute from Kumeu is long. His girlfriend GiGi was going to rent in the city, they wanted to move in together, it seemed like the right thing to do.

He has to pay rent and the bills, but is going to get a part time job to pay for this.

And so he should.

You've done a great thing for your son - he'll feel like an adult the day he moves in, he'll have his independence and he'll have responsibility along with it. You're still be there for him obviously, but I'm sure he'll do his hardest to make a go of it himself.

He'll have the time of his life. IMO nothing in my life was better then the 3 years when I did my degree.
My first flat my mate & I had no furniture. I sat on the sub out off my car, he had a lawn chair he found and we ate of plastic plates. Didn't take long for family and friends to start donating us stuff. Made a coffee table out of some old wood and bricks. And it's some of the fondest memories I have.

Full insurance for it is less the then the GTi180!

That's because nobody wants to steal them. I'll admit, i got bored reading this by this point. But seriously. Your son is only 17 and you bought this for him? worst judgement call. Ever.

Think he won't speed? he will.

Think he won't take passenger? he will.

Think he won't screw it up? he will. Depending on his behaviour and learning, will determine wether he only scares himself, or far worse.

Most people I know, buy their own cars. Having a car handed to you teaches you nothing. I paid for my car, it may be a small practical car, But insurance is dirt cheap, it uses almost no gas, and god knows nobody wants to steal it!
