fast enough to fall off the road even

a 4age KP would be my flavour... lends itself to alot of motorsport forms (club hillclimb rally) and can also be used in the odd d1 round if your that way inclined. In saying that i have seen a ep82 drifting ruapuna
1997 Corolla GT.... AGGGHHHHH too many valves

only problem with that is that turbos get expensive to be busting, and a 1.3 turbo would put me in the 2L classes

imo an fxgt would own a starship around a track....
maybe not in horsepower, but certainly in handling.
ands theres plenty you can do to a fx!

If I didn't already have my AE92 club car, I would be on that Starlet Turbo like a fat kid on a buffet table. I get utterly owned on Manfeild by my friend in his Startled Turbo, and owned nine times out of ten at Autocross' by him as well. Mind you, he does have all the suspension work done, and a decent serving of power.

If you're only running in events that are broken down by FWD / RWD / 4WD then a Starlet is a very good choice.

I don't know if it is specific to hard driven Startled's, but my friend has broken a whole series of things on his car though.

It is a nice car to drive, as I borrowed it for an autocross, and beat him in my first time driving the car. Now I am not allowed to borrow it again

There is one very important piece of advice I can give you (and this is from experience) buy one already done! You'll save yourself so much money, time and brain damage.

I built one up: build cost over $15K (with about 7k more to spend to make it decently competitive) for an AE85 which in the end wasn't that quick (sold)

Bought one done: $12K RS Mirage ex Mirage Cup car (yes that's right, it's not Toyota) which a ready racer with NZ spec Roll cage. Faster and sooo much more potential.

:)

Happy searching :D

I couldn't agree more :)

My car currently probably owes me at least $7k, and she's just a slow old club car.

race car

Now hang on Chelles, you have yet to put it up against my car. Yes very much cheaper to buy one all ready done as I have spent upwards off 30k and about another 3k on the engine coming soon. So watch out Chelles! And that does not include the 1000 odd hours off my time.

I'm building a car at the moment a 1980 EX lancer, should owe me $&#$% all.

Brought a lancer for $500 brought a crashed sigma for $50 with a hot cam

Bolt in the engine out of the sigma.

Got some free 185/60R13 semi slicks I should be able to get me some 13x6.5" and 13x7" deep dish japanese star mags for cheap as off my mate, otherwise I have some 13x6" cheviots.

Can get a cage for about $500 I think, but not nececary for club level.

Play around with the king spring cataloge and get the right ones and use first gereration mirage shocks in the back and put the sigma struts in the front for the big brakes, use the sigma rear end for big drums and solid diff, lock the diff, should owe me under $2000 all up, I'll use cut springs to start off with to save money.

Re: Race Car - decisions?!?!

Santa'sBoostinSleigh wrote:i want to get into some form of racing and have kinda narrowed it down to a couple:

A) car club type stuff - thinking an FXGT or similar

B) KT100 Go-Kart

part of the reason i have thought about these is that i have a fairly limited budget, with a mortgage and mrs :?

car club type stuff would be less often racing i imagine, but be more expensive. would still want to keep this car road legal (as the caldina isnt the best tow vehicle)

gotta try convince myself (and Carpet Burn) what will be the best way to go, and how much everything is going to cost vs the fun/thrill factor!!

any opinions welcome

Not true about the less racing, karts are only generally on every weekend if you are keen to travel all over the country, otherwise it's club days every 3 weeks down here not sure bout the naki.
I also have mrs, mortgage etc and have

1: kt100 sitting in the garage at about 80% completion, missing motor and brakes basicly complete otherwise which owes me bout $600, estimate will cost bout another $1500 to finish which i'm not going to due to lack of time and the fact that

2: datsun 180b gravel sprint/hill climb car which is caged etc owes me bout $1500 all up, was brought half complete and lastly

3: kp60 starlet which i am currently building - working out the final details to get it going now have currently spent $1200 on it including purchase with only cage to go in it then it will be tyres, petrol etc that will be my only costs - oh and entry fees. Homolagtion costs etc which i forgot about till now. Got the starlet cos plates on datto are dead and it's a bit hard to revive them with a cage in it!

So for roughly the same cost as a kart you could have a nice club car, and if you can do most things to your club car yourself you can build it and slowly improve on it as funds allow - if you can't do anythig on it your self then best to buy one. Also if your not mechanically minded a cart probably isn't te best thing for you as setup varys for each track, motor's eed pulling out and rebuilding probably do one a year, thats not cheap either - plus all the other things like tyres etc which aren't all that much cheaper than tyres for a club car, unless your going slicks or somehting equally expensive.

im possibly (please please) getting a free rolling FXGT shell (with no motor or box)
so if i can manage that i might slowly build one up

would need:
motor, loom, ecu, g/box, new shocks/springs, brakes, helmet, harness's, extinguisher

have:
seats

im guessing a blacktop motor + box would be the way to go
how much do these generally go for (and from where)
maybe if i found a crashed levin or something?
