Oh god the people who don't check their mirrors when turning! Thats one of my biggest peeves, i mean hello the mirrors are pretty much right in your line of vision & surely you noticed that car behind you before you turned off? or were you paying no attention what so ever?

If i was a cop i'd focus on this sort of stuff, all the uncourtess shit that goes on, & is still illegal but not picked up upon

2004 & again i think in 2006, nothing major just a few things about when you did need to indicate in roundabouts & when a roundabout isn't a roundabout you actually have to indicate for (when its really small), the new zebra crossing laws & a couple of other ones i think

but those roundabout rules were the rules all along......
it was in the road code when i sat my learners......

This is something that really pisses me off:

Image

I'm the blue car, the blue arrow shows where I'm going. The red car is every dumb $&#$% that cuts me off on a daily basis. The red arrow shows the path they're about to take to cut me off.

I'm travelling on a main road, wanting to turn down a side street, they're coming off another side street, which you could *questionably* call a main road, wanting to turn right onto the road that I'm on. They have a stop sign.

I'll indicate right to turn down my street, and as soon as they see this, combined with me slowing down, they'll instantly start coming out of the street they're waiting in, and I'll end up having to stop and wait for them because they're suddenly in the piece of road that I need to use.

I've had to resort to driving fast towards them (55ish) and not indicate until the last minute just as I'm about to turn into my road, so they think I'm going straight through and wait for me.

It's obvious to me, that they should be waiting since they have the stop sign, and I'm coming from their right, yet they seem to think its ok to turn in front of me, give me the evil eyes, toot their horns, shake their fists etc etc.

This happens EVERY time I use this road to go home (most direct route, so pretty much every time I go home)

& yeah i know everyone would bitch & moan, but something seriously needs to be done about the shockingness of our drivers. & i admit i'm not perfect at it either.

Mandatory licence re-sit every 5 years, both a theory & a practical

& skidpan training for all new drivers in NZ, even those coming in from overseas for more than 3 months & for them a video of how crap our roads are & perhaps its actually better for them not to drive that campervan cause of the said crap roads

Im not complaining! Im all for it. And the training, I agree with it all.

But I've also seen first hand exactly what you just said, middle aged people that start to yell at the cop "go catch some real criminals or boyracers etc etc just because i don't stop im not a bad driver blah blah making money"

My first read of your story and that picture says that you're obligated to give way.

The Red car has to give way to traffic from their right, but as you're indicating right and clearly no longer going to get in their way, they're clear to move.

As soon as theyre on the road in front of you you have to give way to them as you're turning off the main road.

So it'd all be about timing, I guess, but unfortunately thats the way the cookie crumbles - theyre not going to be thinking about your movements as they come out of the T - as soon as you slow down and indicate you cease to be especially relevant to their thinking....

If there is traffic behind you, you have right of way. If there is no traffic, you have to give way to traffic turning right into that street.

Now i witnessed an accident of someone i know and he was driving like an idiot in his new car (turbo'd ae101). Anyway he weaved into the slow/far left lane, and a split 2nd later he smacked into a stationary vehicle waiting to turn left because of giving way to a car waiting to turn right into the street.

Now in theory she should have just gone cause there was plenty of traffic on the road. Now it was clear he was in the wrong but she also is cause she wasn't following the road rules.

I think if people loose their license due to lack of knowledge of the road rules, they should have to resit the drivers test to get their license back...

its not part of the road code but it is just common sense and being aware of what is around u

Reinforcing this. The right turning car which has to give way to vehicles travelling the opposite direction is obligated to give way to any through traffic. If such traffic exists, and if it is able to safely get past the vehicle waiting to turn left, then the right turners must give way. Nothing in there obligates the left turner to notice this and 'use the gap', although the smart ones do.

Girvs, did you read what I said?

Whilst he may find it annoying, I can't see how it's illegal - and if it's not, a complaint to Roadwatch will be laughed at.

Actually no I didn't read what you said.
Given that if he is already moving in the indicated direction on the road, he (in the blue car has the right of way), as long as the guy in the red car is not in the oncoming lane.
If the guy in the red car pulls out to cut in front of him (given distances aren't properly identified through the picture) while he is already turning then the guy in the red is in the wrong as he is moving into flowing oncoming traffic.
It's seems very much like the road is poorly laid out...or the drawing doesn't given enough representation to the actual distances.
Either way if he did have an issue with the driver the link for the website was there, it is then upto the police to decide and hell they may actually make some recommendations to the local council or so forth to try and improve road layout or have signs put in place.

From the red cars point of view, the road i'm turning into is in front and slightly to the right of them, by the time they are facing straight down the road after turning right, they're exactly where I would be when I start turning.

If you did apply the give way rule you are to give way to all traffic that is travelling straight (which you are not) and to all turning traffic on your right, which you are. Given he is on a STOP sign he should be abiding by the give way rules. Given that the road is so screwed up it is a hard one to figure out who is actually in the right in that position. IMHO opinion I'd be inclined to ask the local police station as to any input on it.

the one i really hate, is people who use the medium strip as a lane

like darting down the center faster then the traffic flow just because they want to turn right, even tho the turn is like 200meters down the road,
this happens out side my work all the time and crash all the time,
if only people can wait that 2minuts to avoid a head on with on coming traffic,

Frost, I use the median to my advantage

maybe its not right to do so, but if it saves 3 sets of red lights, and you travel down it at a sensible speed I don't see a problem.

in regards to those medians tho.... my pet peeve is people that DON'T use that part of the road.... they will wait till just before the right turn before they pull into it.... this jams up traffic at times.... with no good reason to do so.... the road is there so why not use it

I see the median (will be different in some cases) as a place where people can park while they wait to turn right, so if traffic turning right gets backed up, it doesn't hold up straight through traffic.... so if you look at it that way, i'd happily use it everytime.

medians are for turning onto and off the road, so you dont park in a stupid place and hold things up.

No the worst thing is when a couple of these idiots (and I used to work with one) who insist that the proper way to go straight through a roundabout is

- Indicate to the left when coming up to the roundabout

- when you have just entered the roundabout, start indicating to the right thereby scaring the shit out of the poor bastard who had presumed that you were turning left and had started to go himself/run straight into poor bastard cos he trusted your indication

- then indicate left again to leave the roundabout thereby confusing absolutely everyone else, while being convinced that you are a superior driver and everyone else is crap, especially that lunatic that tried to pull out in front of you when you were indicating properly

Now this is an endrant :D :D

The red car always has right of way. I mean it must have because all the road codes and licenece test's i've ever seen the red car is always the one with the right of way. It may have changed now tho was a long time since i did any licence tests.

I'd say tho for postfach in all seriousness red car has right of way. Basicly what you are saying is that if there was no traffic behind you but line of traffis coming towards you and red car pulled in behind last car of traffic he would be in the wrong? When he is able to pull out of his intersection and have car in a straight line coming towards you he has in effect completed his manouver in the intersection and is now travelling on a straight road. Also to give way to his right which is what i'm assuming your complaint about failing to do is for you must first be able to hit his right hand side before he has to give way to you. If turnig to the right at said point in road you are not going to hit him. Red car has right of way simply because you aren't going into his intersection.
Mabe to simplify things we spread the intersection out by about 30 meters, if you were stuck behind the red car would you not be pissed if he gave way to everyone who was turnng right 30 meters up the road?? What you are in effect complaining about is the guy who fails to give way to you at a completely different intersection. In effect you are saying that everyone must give way to you are you not??

Oh and the general public understanding of round abouts is crap, also no one seems to know that you aren't supposed to enter an intersection untill the exit is clear for you to continue, i know we all are guilty of creeping forwards whilst waiting to turn right at traffic lights (don't pretend you aren't) but when going straight through wouldn't commen sense tell you to wait at the line untill you aren't blocking a lane or two of traffic that may ust get the green light before you move out of the middle of the intersection.

Now i await with baited breath to hear the reply to this :)

Loudtoy: re your response to Postfach, thats exactly how I read the situation. Good man.

Re the traffic lights - If you creep beyond your line, you're an idiot. ;-)
However yes, you are not meant to block the intersection thus you should not go unless there's room for you on the other side...

As do I although looking at that picture it could be down to interpretation of the attending officer at the time, IMO the picture is drawn like it is 2 separate road on a straight piece of road, The only cars the red car would have to give way to would be the ones entering his/her road or going straight through.

Also I don't get it when people talk about the "new" roundabout rules? They have been the same since I got my license back in 1997.
