I'm all for this...

Anything that gets the noise down would be great...

Cant help but think that we wouldnt be having these government changes if the munters didnt start doing burnouts and boosting up suburban streets at 10pm

Sure having exhaust gas leaking in front of the firewall can get into the cabin, but how often are you driving at full boost? Wouldnt be for more then 1minute. Stopping in a traffic jam with a car infront of you would be more dangerous, or beside a big truck with its exhaust dumping straight into your window because youve lowered your car to that height!

And in an mr2, that would be perfectly legal by the sounds of things to have some sort of muffler on the screamer, since its behind the last opening window anyway.

It's not harmful at all. They are only making it (or should I say, have made it) illegal because of the noise but its easier for them to ban it on the grounds that it's "unsafe". Having a screamer venting in front of the firewall is NOT unsafe as far as exhaust gases go. Maybe if you're on boost for 5 minutes, sure, it could be harmful. But I VERY much doubt ANYONE would be on full boost for that amount of time!
Correct me if I'm wrong - but take a look at Willie White's funny car for example.....

I'm pretty bloody sure his car would be venting more dangerous gases in 6 seconds than any other road car's screamer would in a week.

It f's me off - old people and Mr po-po need to get over themselves. Old people: go sip some tea, Mr po-po: go arrest a rapist or a murderer and stop f'ing with things you don't understand

Did you not read my post?

My own car caught fire. (yes I was one of the dicks I am talking about), after a oil line started to seep, and hot flames were around the engine bay.

It is dangerous.

And even if its done properly so that it doesn't cause safety issues, its still not needed!! its $&#$% loud for no reason at all.

Im glad that you know more than the police about external wastegates. You get a gold star!

I wish people like you would f off and stop $&#$% with things YOU don't understand (like the way police do their job)

A oil leak on a hot manifold could start a fire. I've got a good idea, lets ban exhaust manifolds!

As for the noise issue, i was in town last saturday and there was a T bucket cruising around. One of the loudest things i've heard in my life! Some sort of V8 with the shortest exhaust ever and a tiny resonator just after the collector then thats it. Looked like a straight pipe pretty much.

I had wheelie bars too.

Idled louder than my car at full noise and when he have it some stick you could hear it a few blocks away. I didnt see cops pulling it over.

It did sound cool though

And as said earlier, its only loud when at full boost. How often do you go full stick on public roads?
Gate or no gate there is no real excuse to be going down a public road at full noise. Weather your car is loud or quiet. Just cos you can hear it doesn't mean its not there.

I gotta admit this post really pisses me off, its our attitude of "ill do what i like and screw everyone else" which is why the car culture gets so much attention...

People are too short sighted to see that almost everything they do indirectly affects everything else... thats why burnouts and chopped springs and all this nonsense is illegal...

Back to the issue..

Were are dealing with exhausts from an engine right? It doesn't matter if the pipe only gets used 1% of the time, or 100% of the time, its still an exhaust and must comply with the regulations.

Speaking of regulations, they are there to protect not just Joe public, but also you.

Ever driven a car with just extractors / nothing behind the firewall? I had to drive one of my old cars (just extractors) in to get the exhaust welded up years ago, I was giddy by the time I exited the Mt Victoria tunnel, those fumes accumulate in the cabin.. Every wondered why people die when they pipe the exhaust back into the car?

If you sooo need your dump pipe for the track, buy some flanges and build a connecting pipe that joins the main exhaust. just unbolt the pipe and cover the hole in main exhaust when your racing.

But thats straight out dangerous and burnouts are direct damage to council property. Fair enough.

There is no matter of need. I don't want to spend a extra $100 just to plum it in.

Soon it will be like other countries where its illegal to do pretty much anything thats not standard to a car.

So what if i put a performance exhaust on my car, modify the intake, lower it and tint my windows. You cant even do that in a lot of countries.

These forums would be like " yeaah boi got the new pine fresh air sanitizer in my car and made the carpets red!"

Yep, And excessive noise disrupts the piece, stops people from sleeping and generally annoys the entire public for the sake of a minority's desire to show off

Dont get me wrong, there is a time and a place for everything... but because our community has demonstrated that we cannot act responsibly we are getting hammered... we have only ourselves to blame im afraid...

Some pulling a skid can be heard form pretty far away. Especially when they dont have enough power or what ever and you get that all mighty squeel. The cars with straight pipes make lots of noise too. External wastegates are hardly the problem. I hear the above two a lot, wastegates not so often. Its just easy to ban them, will it change anything?

Again, they shouldn't be fanging their cars going full tilt on public roads during the early hours of the morning in the first place.
But is it alright to do 100+ down your road if they are quiet? (dont tell me you live on a country road  )
Next thing you will have a car in your living room.

Banning wastegates is just a easy way out. There will still be plenty of noise from hoons pulling skids and no exhausts. Or the hot rodders laws dont seem to apply to.

Mine is currently venting to atmosphere, I am changing it now because I have it in bits anyway and is relatively easy to sort out so its not a problem. It was venting to atmo becuase it was easier that way and the theory is that there is no restriction of airflow - therefore no chance of it causing boost spike or creep.

Hopefully I can design it to flow well and there shouldn't be a problem with boost control...fingers crossed anyway.

Infact it failed a wof on some other things but no mention was made about the wastegate!

Oh common - if you have a fuel leak that could also catch fire from any number of things in the engine bay. Ban fuel you say? Run our cars on water? There's a thread on that here somewhere - go nuts.
There are so many things that are loud for no reason at all - like cars - performance car's are loud - whether they need to be or not. Whats the point of being a fast car without shouting about it?

Don't even get me started on the police and doing their job. The police as an entity need to be separated into how they used to be, Traffic Police, and REAL police (you know - the ones that actually do good in this country, not just the revenue collect sons of b..ches)

Im saying wastegates arn't the big problem. Its the kids hooning down suburban roads at crazy speeds and loosing control... Cars do end up on or in peoples properties..

Well ban the show off attitude. Ban lowring your car, ban sports exhaust, ban aftermarket wheels. Thats what its coming to.

The car culture gets so much attention is not because of the externally venting wastegates - its the fact that mr no-nuts in their pocket rocket (which is probably actually slow) is doing burnouts and drag racing on public streets.

Because no-one else cares... its your car... you enjoy it, your not going to have the "bitches" lining up around the block because your cars fast & loud

Sorry can you give me an example of revenue collecting? I have been let off way more $$$ than i have been ticketed for... If you are polite to the cop he/she will be leanient... if give him attitude youll get done, if your driving like a munter youll get done (not saying you drive like a munter - just saying that you only really get slammed by the cops if your a munter)

Ditto....

Also - isn't there a limit - you cant put wheels bigger than 2" from factory, i.e. if they came out with 15" max - you cant go to 18" or more? Sorry getting off topic :P
