Why do people put gauges in the passengers side dash area??

You wouldn't be able to see they bloody things when you really need the gauges anyway (racing etc).

Previous owner put a voltmeter/tacho on the passenger side dash of my car :? disconnected it, but dont wanna remove cause it's left big hory holes in the dash..

Is a dash easy to replace?
