toyota ignition barrels are just too hard to whack with a hammer/screwdriver. some as$h0le attempted to take my corolla 2 weeks ago leaving my dash completely f*cked, probably given up when the c*nt cant take the steering off lock.

yup, i work for them (in an assessment centre with stolen cars no less ) and I'd have to agree it's appears a bit B/S
my S14 is insured with AA cos I get a nice discount and it's a good policy, but I cant imagine there are 100s of them insured with AA. but hey I could be wrong.

so lets put it in perspective:

10 silvias insured, 3 get stolen = 30% loss ratio.

1000 imprezas insured, 200 get stolen = 20% loss ratio.

these are just made up figures, but based on that would you say the impreza was a safer car?? maybe... but perhaps not.

now sure I worry about where I park my silvia, and yeah someones had a go at it, but they were professional and prepared (lucky i interrupted them) you'll find that most thefts are not planned, just some opportunist with a universal key he just got on five-finger-discount from bunnings. This is why 90% of the stolen & recovered cars I see are nothing special (base spec impreza, nissan pulsar), cos they are less likely to be alarmed or have an owner near by with a large, blunt object, and they're just a cheap taxi ride somewhere.
The real comparison that you should make is "if my car is stolen, will I see it again?" With my silvia, that would probably be parted out before the next day or wrapped round a pole, but the supermarket shuttle will turn up in a day or two needing a new ignition and a bloody good clean (if you're lucky). And that is what will keep silvias and the like near the top of this list, not the frequency of thefts, but the cost involved, $15k+ total loss vs $2k repair.
In the end, the more popular a car is, the more it may be worth, the more you'll try to keep it safe, the more effort someone will have to make to steal it, and the less likely you see your car again if they succeed.

my uncle has a (newish) na subaru Legacy its been stolen about 5 times and always been recovered. its just an easy joy ride

When I was with the AA yeeears ago, I bought an AE92 Levin. The AA would not insure me (was 18) as the 2 door coupe body made it a performance car.
Hilarous thing was they insured me for my very first car. A 1970 V6 Capri! You tell me which is more likely to kill a young male driver!

You are right, They steal the cars for the engine, trans, interior (including dash/speedo) wheels if they are nice, the rest gets crushed...

lol yeah a couple yrs ago AA said NO to RX-8s cos they were rotors, even for the 60yr old lady that bought it cos it was a zippy little 1300cc car now there's all sorts on policy, even some rather nice gtr's. but hey, sometimes it's not what you know, it's who you know
