Amazing!
Can anyone tell me what a brand new factory auto box and that loom would have cost? I wouldn't have thought cheap at all. Well worth replacing the loom for sure, but to buy the box and not use it...
Still not sold on the wheels, I don't think they look like a matching pair.
Only other thing I didn't like was the choice of box, I would have gone for a manual, but that's just personal preference.
Easily one of the best builds I have seen, if not the best!
Very jealous that you still can't buy all Starion parts new like that :(

If he has got himself a GT3 it would be much better end result:
1) handling (and no, "drag racing" coilovers are not something that will improve handling).
2) depreciation (his car is unsellable).
3) practicality (he tuned it for specific gas, tyres are too wide, etc)
4) fuel economy.
5) reliability - 600kw through and auto that is designed to handle 200kw is bad idea. Same for the diff.
6) there was no chassis work done (unless I missed it).

Priced up a brand new 6-spd Getrag once upon a time $24 K Toyota RRP was the parts guy I spoke to reckoned he could get it for maybe between $10-12K I'd suggest the A340 E would be somewhere North of $10 K.

While i can appreciate the effort and money put into it, 90% of it is pointless / a waste IMO. Also i dont particularly like people not working on their own cars. The black hides the details on the bodywork and wheels are poose also.

Oh and a mate of mine just brought a V160 brand new from Toyota for $5000, retail still $24000

The point is that he did it for himself, he wanted a supra with 100% new parts, who are we to say its pointless?

Toyota Japan even put some discontinued lines back into action so he could source all of the parts he needed.

While I agree with your notion about people not working on their own cars, Im pretty sure he worked bloody hard to earn the money he spent on his build. Sure he shipped it to the states to get built by some reknowned supra experts, but atleast it was built to the standard he wanted, and every single thing was done to order. He actually put a HUGE amount of personal effort into the build, he just didnt pick up the tools to do it himself, but was extremely involved in every part of the build.

What I found funny is that he didn't rate anyone in the Australian Automotive industry to carry out this project.He had to ship it to the US and then went and bought another dona car while he was at it because his one wasn't dead on straight.

As I mentioned this build will top that $300 K mark easily and the guy is totally committed makes me think hey why not ask Toyota/TRD Japan to build him a car of this magnitude they'd do a better job.

It's kinda cool. I gave up by 11:45 last night when I got to the bit where most of the posts are people saying "OMFG, jizz this car, amazeballs. I want your babies" etc...
I'm going to be another one who says "where did all the money come from?".

it is often underestimated how much effort is required on a project before you even bother picking up a spanner, let alone one of this magnitude. I know i couldnt go to the lengths this guy has gone to, so much kudos to him.

I know a guy in Auckland who completly restored an ae82 FX-GT to factory.
Got everything re-trimmed, engine was 100% stock. Did everything. Spent $20,000 at least. Car maybe worth $1000. But it was his 1st car and he was in love with it. He sold it many years ago and refound it on trademe.

Why did he do it? Cause he wanted to.. i doubt he cares what others think.

I think at the end of the day people can spend money on anything they like. I think this is probably one of the better ways to spend it. At least he will be happy. If it truly makes him happy then its not money wasted I guess.

Also with the comment regarding the auto box, you missed the part where he put in a full drag racing spec auto box.

so he bought a brand new toyota trans and then replaced it with something else?
seems like the story of the build... buy something expensive and the replace it before use

complete waste of money to me

The whole "If you don't build it yourself you suck" argurement is ridiculous.

I like working on my car, but I realised years ago that there is no point me spending several days doing something that I could just pay someone to do in a few hours.

In the few days I didn't spend on the car, I was working, earning money doing what I do for a living. During that few days I earnt more than it cost to pay the mechanic.

Because someone pays to have someone work on their car, doesn't mean they can't do it themselves, or they deserve more/less respect than someone else.

More often than not, its just hating on someone that can afford to do something you wish you could.

exactly!

I quite enjoy spinning spanners on my car and for easy stuff ill do myself - hell i would probably pull the engine out with help and the correct gear if i wanted to - but i could also pay someone to do it and i could spend that time elsewhere instead of swearing at dirt and grease

but there are areas where i will gladly pay someone to do work for me - i got a host of rust repairs done to the supra last week - which involved sandblasting, cutting, welding and bogging before prepping and painting - that sorta work bores me and i simply lack the patience and skillset to do the job well - so im happy to pay someone else do do that work

I think many of the people saying its a waste of money are as has already been suggested somewhat green faced of the owners financial position
