i completely agree with FLYGT4, iv everyone followed the conditions of thier license there would be next to no accidents, everybody wins.

on a side note i have now lost any and all respect i once had for the
New Zealand police. (que story)

myself and a couple of friends were staying in Maitai (nelson) for new years, on new years day approx 10am we decided to go get some breakfast, the driver paid 2 bucks and took the breath test at the camp site (just one of the ones you can buy, nothing to do with the police) blew 0 breath alchole so we were off, just up the road there was a police checkpoint which we were informed about by the camp security) the driver did the police test and passed, we then asked Mr Plod if another passenger could take the test as we needed two drivers shortly and wanted to know if he would be ok, to which Mr Plod replied "No, we cant do that, it only tells if you pass or fail" So after the "are you $&#$% serious" from myself and the other passengers picking their jaws off the floor we were on our way.

on our way back to camp there was a WoF/Rego/License check (on the same road about 200m further up checking ppl in the opposite direction) we asked the Mrs Plod what the deal was and she replied "oh its because the mouth pieces you blow into cost money"
WHAT A CROCK OF SHIT. the breath tester used by the police at that check point had no mouth piece it was the count to 5 style one.

Now am i wrong in my thinking that the police should be doing everything they can to keep drunk drivers off the road? if this was the case they would have checked my fellow passenger to see if he was ok or over the limit. and as for the whole "It costs money" what is more valuable an imagionary piece of plastic that gets blown into or human lives???

this is the most blatent revenue gathering i have had the misfortune of witnessing, im tempted to write to the commander of the Nelson police, and express my disgust at their revenue gathering over human life philosophy.

anyways End rant

how is that revenue gathering?

i have struck that too. the reasoning is more if you have ANY doubt. dont drive.
there is also the issue that you may have just downed a couple that havnt entered your blood. so you may pass now, but an hour later fail. dont tell me you wouldnt cause issues if that happened to you.

if you stay in the maitai. expect things to be hard, the trouble caused by out of towners at new years has been amazing

It's called Natural selection... it increases the average IQ of the country by killing those too stupid to wear seatbelts.

With stats like that, I'd be keen on making motorbike helmets optional too

Some of those tables paint interesting pictures, the number of deaths per 10000 cars is steadily(although tapering off) on the decrease... All we need are more cars.

And I'm with revhead on the breathe testing... if you think you may have had too much to drive, don't drive.

From testing when I was younger(cop was parents friend), I learned that the fail limit was far in excess of where I would no longer drive because of how I felt.

I'm all for a 0 alcohol policy, as in, you drink anything, you dont drive, simple, and much more easily enforced... although it may make testing tricky with alcohol based mouthwash and aftershaves etc.

it was pretty calm up there this year i only saw one fight, there was like 30 security guards 24/7, on a side note dont anyone go to kiteri its turned to a super rich family get away, so unless you have a 100k + boat and a 150k+ range rover dont go there lol

i see it a revenue gathering bucause the police would rather my mate to get butsed than to tell him not to drive for a bit. an like you said if there is any doubt dont drive, true, but some ppl may be fine driving wel over the limit, by the police testing the passenger there would have been no doubt at all.

The road side detectors only tell you pass or fail.

There are 3 steps normally.

First is a hold in front of your mouth while you talk. That should go fail at ANY booze at all.

The second stage is a tube placed onto the top of the detector. That is a pass, or fail general, or fail youth. If this one fails you, you have to go with the cop to do a real one.

The next one is the real one that reads out a number.

I have been in a car where we asked for a 2nd person to be tested. Cop said okay, but gave a 5 min blurb on how the results were for our info only, that they were not able to used as evidence, etc etc. So if he was busy I can understand him not wanting to waste time.

The funny thing was the guy we wanted tested had consumed a fair amount of liquids, and was sluring his words, and was rather unco-ordinated. He passed the non contact machine, cop was all WTF! so the cop wanted to try the bag test.
Passed that too. Guy got out of car and couldnt stand up. Mr Policeman suggested even though he passed, he shouldnt drive for a fair while 8)

cellphones!!!!

Followed a taxi up SH2 in the Hutt today , guy is doing 80 in the right hand lane yacking on his cellphone.

Saw a Suzuki on a roundabout, woman did the whole thing in first gear coz her left hand was on her phone, not the stick... guy behind in a skyline didnt appreciate it...

cellphone use is going to be outlawed one day, which is going to suck hard; its the people who don't know how to divide their time correctly that're gonna cost all of us our freedom....

cops can already ticket you for it....

ex-g'fs sister got a ticket for basically being distracted cos she was txting while driving... cant remember the wording on the ticket, was something like "not paying due attention" or similar... $150 fine...

cops can pretty much ticket you for anything cos some of the laws are sooo vague...

The chick probably deserved it. No way you should be sending SMS while driving.

A law that talks about distraction (etc) is fine, but I wonder how long it'll be before we duplicate the UK's laws on the subject. Then its cut and dried and less up to the officers discretion.
