I think the main problem is that most gearbox breakages on Evo's is that they are popular for drag racing. They were never built for that so of course people are going to break them, something you should think about is even though they were never built for drag race hard launches, they certainly take it pretty well dont they! Try doing the same think to a WRX, GTIR or a GT4!
But yes the roof rust thing is a bad point but not something that should be a big thing with buying one. This only effected the 1-3 evo anyway from what I've seen.
Anyway, Im keeping the 86 for the time being it serves its purpose well. ie it puts a big grin on my face everytime
