Because the Torneo makes you feel like you're sitting on the roof!

Seriously... work mate bought one, I went and sat in it, felt like I could have parked another car underneath the drivers seat... wtf.

Yup good reasoning.

Mines got 60mm lower rails ;) So you don't need to worry about parking cars beneath the seat

There is a reason why they start out *massively* expensive as new cars, then once they reach a certain age (typically about ten maybe fifteen years old or so) that they become almost "free with your cereal" level prices.

If they were *that* good, they'd still demand premium prices at ten years old. Some things like Porches do ... almost everything else depreciates like they're on fire and filled up with dead bodies.

Disclaimer: I'm well known for not being keen on the Euro cars, so I'm as biased as a biased thing that needs a wheel alignment.

Dunno about that to be honest. Euro econoboxes are worth bugger all (same as Jap econoboxes eg Yaris, Vitz etc) but anything worthy of mention is still worth big money.

Very few of the cars mentioned in this topic were in the "cheap" car category when they were brand new yet 10 years later (and less in many cases) they're in the $10-12k bracket...You'd be struggling to find a performance oriented Euro (Not supercars, Golf GTI, Audi S3/S4, BMW M3 etc) made in the late 90's/early 2000's in that price bracket and the few that are, are starting to get up there in terms of kms.

Cheap shitty Singapore imports that have had no looking after since new ruin the reputation of what are in fact some good cars.

EDIT: When I say Euros I exclude the French (wouldn't know how to build a car if the factories came with instructions) and Alfa-Romeo (ergh)

You have a Clio! Has anything fallen off lately? :P My workmate's Alfa 156 had a rear caliper fall off (and destroy EVERYTHING) while he was driving :?

Golf Gti or Ford Focus are other possibilities, driven both in manual and been pretty impressed, especially with the focus (probably because I thought it was gonna be rubbish :P) and being hatchbacks they are pretty dam useful.

If I was looking at a car in that range I would be looking at something like this

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 280367.htm

And if you haven't driven a 2ZZGE manual powered car before,
then you have to find one and try it.

Do they produce one in an FR layout?

Alfa's are epic fun, as long as they're manual and 6 cylinder. (Both the q-system and the selespeed are utter shit)

But a nice tidy Kiwi-new E39 BMW would be a safe sensible bet.

The only 2ZZ in RWD form is a TRS car, so not very practical for going to the shop,
and they are not easy to make RWD. We seriously looked at it for my car, but too many problems with a RWD conversion on that motor.

just wanted to quote this for a bit of truth. though 'good' might be stretching things a tad, i cannot stress enough how terrible cars from singapore are.

That said, older Euros have been ambushing wallets long before Singapore imports existed. Even 20 years ago owning an Alfa meant you would spend more time with your auto sparky than your wife.

I wouldn't be mocking myself... We wouldn't be where we were today in at automotive scene if it weren't for the timeless style of the G-zero. And lets face it... They are totally JDM so still fit today's popular tuning aesthetic perfectly.
