I nearly bought one but it was cheap enough I started questioning its legitimacy, they get stolen a lot
The V1 is great. Definitely the best radar I've ever used. I've had mine for a good couple of years now and it has paid for itself many times over. The only downside is that the display angles towards the left a little bit (makes sense since it's made in the US) but with the additional purchase of the concealed display you can place it wherever you like so it's only a glance away. I've had it set up like that in my white one for years so to have to look up to the windscreen (or in this case the passenger's sunvisor) was a pain, so I decided to buy another concealed display.
Yeah I can imagine there'd be a few stolen ones out there. The first thing to ask for before buying one is the serial number. Not only does this help to weed out the stolen ones but you can check exactly which version it is by entering the serial number into the Valentine One website. The one to go for is V1.8.A, with the crystal controlled frequency tuning. This is the latest and greatest performer and due to the crystal controlled frequency tuning it won't go 'out of tune' like the previous versions, meaning you'll never have to worry about the accuracy/range of the radar as the years go on. V1.8.A has been out for a while now, and even though there are a couple of newer features such as ESP and Traffic Monitor Filter you really don't need these, especially since the TMF is for the US only.
What I like the most about the V1 is that you can turn off each individual band, unlike a lot of other radars that only have 'highway' and 'city' modes. For example, around town I only ever have Ka Band (police radar) and Laser (gun) activated, but when I head out of town (such as on a State Highway or in the country) I turn on K band so it picks up any roadside speed camera vans. If you have K band on around town it'll pick up every conceivable security camera and automatic opening door, but fortunately it's very quick and easy to turn your preferred bands on or off. Because of this, when it goes off I know for a fact there's a 'threat' around, whereas with previous cheaper radars I've owned I got so used to it going off every 5-seconds that I'd literally 'tune out' and when a real threat did occur I'd subconsciously ignore it (sort of like the boy who cried wolf

).
Anyway, if you can get one for between $350-550 you'd be doing well. Brand new they're about a grand. Ignore it when you see "tuned for NZ conditions", because all that means is that they're turned off a few bands like I previously mentioned. You can do that in a few seconds with all of them. Just be sure to get the 10-digit serial number (found on the bottom of the unit), check it on the V1 site and you'll be sweet as
