Its a bit crap there isnt more "drift practice" places, but i think theres a difference between legitimately practicing drifting on open roads and just plain loitering and doing burnouts and street drags etc.

They gave these retard kids track-days and numerous chances to do the things they like to do in a safe legal environment but they wouldn't have a bar of it. For them i think its more about being rebellious and breaking the rules.

Im 21 i hit the track whenever i can its great fun and i dont go out on saturday to watch some ricey shitbox cars to some half assed skids. Infact i went to a drift day at taupo to watch some drifitng and it was boring too so i dont know where the hell these people came from, driftings got nothing to do with it as far as im concerned, it just attracts a few flat hats here and there when mad mike makes a 15 rotor 210B turbo barpbarp wider than it is long tank

This actually made me laugh in the real world and out rather loudly.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Surely half the obsession is with doing things that're illegal? Isn't that the thrill?

Frost, you make some valid points. For as long as there's been motor cars there's been people who want to race them.
We even sung about it in the 60's and 70's.

Just 'cos it wasn't on tv didn't mean it didn't happen. Last year when the car crushing legislation was going through (and CHCH police had wound down enforcement to create more problems and help push the law through) there was a big hot rod event up north, plenty of tickets handed out for drink driving and dangerous driving, but it didn't fit the "kids in jappas" narrative that they were telling at the time, so it kinda went by the way side.

Well appearantly it did make the news and i was wrong they had over 70,000 attend and there was afew tickets and afew arrests, the arrests were from a couple of locals that seem to have forgotten there was a alcohol ban.
A some what simple answer is if you want respect for what your doing you need to earn it, just because you think its ok doesnt automaticly give the right to do so.
Now bad news makes good news for the media and if it doesnt make the news what does that tell you?

For those who wish to do things right it wont be an issue, you all know the police are out to make a point and when those who are at fault bite at it well it just keeps on going.

HA don't even get me started on zoomie exhausts or laker pipes,
i love them!!! they make fart cannons sound like pee shooters,

one day i'll build a 32 roadster in black with red pinstripes, flat head v8, no bonnet and zoomie exhaust pipes, i just have to find a good condition body and flat head v8, slick my hair back, black jeans, small white shirt, and a switch blade knife,

Will be an interesting Documentary to watch.....

But these days the street racing / burnouts scene is dead.

Can remember back 7ish years, Tauranga, when every Friday night Sulpher Point would be the place for skids, Maru Street was skid / drag heaven & even Portside got a doughnut or two. Hell, people used to tip diesel on that roundabout outside bauerepais on Totara street.

Don't see anything like that any more.

I've ben in Hamilton for 3 years, and even now the scene at Te Rapa is just a shadow of it's former self.

I don't even bother going out cruising in my own car any more, think I've been out twice this year, both times in a mates car.

Think the police have damn near achieved what they set out to do.

Oh, and one last point: You are more likely to be killed by a 50yr old drunk driver, than a "boy racer" doing a skid.

You are correct Steve. We did stupid things back then.

Didn't need diesel on a wet night, the trucks would drop so much diesel & oil that when it rained it was like driving on Ice

Thats an interesting point when it rains hard along the auckland water front its amazing how much oil there is, and being fair about all this it doesnt make it safe even for joe public.
And as you say thats caused by the trucks not caps on backwards boys.

And if it was kids in jap cars it would have been the end of the world.

If what ever behaviour is within the law you have an absolute right to do it, not you or anyone else has any special position as arbitrator of who has the right to do what legal activities.

That they are getting far more traction beating up on kids in jap cars, not only does john smith down the street like to judge young people, but so do older people with tastes for different (read: classic and US) cars like to be mr superior, talking down to other types of car enthusiasts.

What about those who do things right but get falsely accused of crimes? really only needs to happen once to destroy a lifetime of respect.

Well as much as you may have put thought into all this remember for those who do play up they are the problem and the minority thus they will loose everytime.

It doesnt matter wether its a jappa or a yank tank youll get nailed for being a dick, if you feel your being picked on and your the innocent one then blame the bad apples not those who have had a guts full of the crap.

And your right it only needs to happen once and your reputation goes down the toilet, hammer those who are to blame.
And the powers to be realy dont care what your side of the story, the reputation of the import enthusiest has long been tarnished and if you want it changed then prove everyone one otherwise.

We all have the right to live in this country, you live outside the law of the land you pay the penalty.
