I'm think 7" is definately going to be wide enough, but is 15" going to be too small?

Depends on the look you're going for...15's can look good, and obviously weigh less. 17's and up will fill the guards more, but can make the car look like a rollerskate if its not lowered suitably.

What tyres are you wanting to run? This is a track car isn't it?
You need to think about what tyres are available if thats the case

Widened steel wheels aren't new at all. The old man tells stories how they would cut a rim on a lathe and weld a 2" or 4" steel band in the rim.

Go talk to your local engineers :)

there is a rule with wheels the width cannot be less that 1/2 the diameter. ie:
15x7.5
16x8
17x8.5
18x9
Stick to this formula and you will be right

15x7 will result in a fail.

Don't know where you got that rule from, most 15inch wheels are 6.5inch and 7inch wide, even down to 6inch for some of the lighter wheels.

In 15inch, most Rspec (semi slick) tyres come in 205/50/R15 or 195/50/R15. They tend to be the most popular, and depending on the brand 6.5inch and 7inch is the perfered width for a 15inch wheel, check out the manufactures website (bridgestone, toyo, yoko etc)

oh..

don't take me too literally it is an unwritten rule of mine to ensure cool-factor. 8)

i run a 205-50-15 on a 15x8 which makes things look like this:

or this if you look end on

which is just fine by me.. The 02g is a pretty generous 205 ( near on 215mm tread width)

very bad idea,
im sure we covered this topic one year ago, quite a few pages of info too,
basically cast wheels like this one should not be widened because there prone to stress cracking, and the alloy is too old to weld and is more porous then the new alloy being introduced causing the surrounding metal to stress and crack over time,

Sweet, no worries about that, thought there might have been serious rule that nobody told me (or wheel makers) :P Yeah dunlops are generous in width same with alot of other semi slicks, some semi slicks 195's are wider than street tyres in 205's.
