was thinking about this today. if they have a portable breath screening device, and send you the station for an evidential test, why can't they do the same with niose?
the officer can claim it's noisy (like drinking) and accompany you to the station ,where they have a legall test area, and test the car legally.
you would quite possibly have 80% of cars stopped get off the charge for being well under. this would deter then from hassling the masses and concentrate on picking on the guys this law was intended for.

anyone see the drift car warming up for the burnouts on TV??? the neighbours were concerned about the possible noise levels, so they let one of CHCH boys let rip. 20dBA under the imposed limit of 85 and it was hussing and chirping and everyone thing a trick car should.

maybe they impose a lower limit after 10:30-11pm???

maybe a few marginal ones need to get a lawyer to back then and ask the Crown to produce there evidence ?? it would soon wake the NZPolice to get some metering devices
I've been a bad bad boy. I should read the rules and behave before I get spanked by an admin

f#@k you i won't do what ya tell me

Ahh i remember the days of the mot, wasn't that fun and weren't there cars so easy to identify from a distance - also created a lot more respect for the police, they were the ones who kept the streets safe for everyone. Unfortunately the two were joined, bad move, and i think part of the reason was because the mot was having trouble recruiting people. Honestly who would want to go and do traffic duty all day, which is possibly another reason the police are as hard as they are(apart from the ones who do it cos they enjoy traffic duty), i get pissed off doing a job i hate as well.
Maybe a petition would do oh wait thats right helen doesn't listen to what the voting and taxpaying members of the nation think, just the voting non taxpaying ones. really tho what would help things would be a reversal back to mot and police, that way each seperate force would have all the proper equipment rather than half assed gear (sorry officers out there with good hearing db meters  ) and we wouldn't have complaints like this

you must have a sh*t memory, wasnt that long ago!!!!

Type "ministry of transport merge police" minus the speech marks into google and hit 'i'm feeling lucky'

1993

* A revised junior school unit Keeping Ourselves Safe trialed and published.
* Merger of the Ministry of Transport with the New Zealand Police. (This included all Traffic Officers involved in school education).

Your 20 year old poster is 20 in the year 2006, so he would have been born in 1986 - or, 7 years old in the year they merged. I could forgive him for not remembering. (Failure to use Google? Now thats a capital crime...)

:)

But yes, there are pros and cons of having them merged, Legislatively its much simpler now though.

(And i'm sure this was all discussed a while back... !)

I would too, but I couldn't pass the cop physical test if I worked out for 12 weeks prior.

Power, by definition, is open to abuse.

Why dont we slap a big fine on all those parents who can't stop thier little brats from screaming and whinging whilst i am trying to enjoy a meal in a restraunt?
Law enforcement should be equal. There should be no room for subjective judgements. It shouldn't be a case of "good cop, bad cop", or for that matter "cop had a good day, cop had a bad day". There's a measurable limit.Traffic officers should be given a noise meter and clear instructions how to use it and there won't be a problem. harleys and Old morris Minors with a standard exhaust system are far louder than many modern jappas with huge exhausts. Thus i'd like to see this law fairly applied to all with a standard testing system not guess work.
An exhuast system that someone has had on thier car for years without any hassle will now net them a $250 fine? If the police keep issuing hugely obnoxious fines for loud exhausts nobody will have enough cash left to solve thier problems. Exhaust systems aint cheap and im sure mr fuzz aint going to be forking out for it.

the annoyance is coming from sharp acceleration through 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear, not noisy exhausts themselves. The boy racer law caters to this does it not? Why implement another law which punishes the sensible car user?

There is actually nothing illegal about accelerating as fast as possible as long as you don't break traction or exceed the speed limit.

out of interest does anyone know what they are setting the limit at?
i heard 96db but havent heard this confirmed.

I also heard that some cars whose exhausts are deemed "noisy" are well within this limit due to thier exhaust not actually being noisy but of more of a bass tone. Such as the old skool supras and such. apparently they only sit around late eighties due to most of the noise being of bassier tone

confirmation anyone??

I was prety sure there was excessive acceleration law, and at what frequancy would you set the DB limit. I dont think its as easy as just putting a mic up to the exaust.

Im not putting my silencer is. I'll ask a cop to rev his V8 and see how loud that is...

Anyways I gone pass cops already and none have bothered. Just chuck it in neutral as you go pass em. Unless you lapping you have no reason to stop and go often.

Thats exactly my point, a V8 at 90db will be not anywhere near as annoying as a 1600 4 banger @ 90db
