It takes 50sec to get to 400k.

Based on those specs the Veyron would need 4 new tyres and a full tank of gas every minute at motorway speeds....it would also never get to 400km/h because it would have to stop for tyres and fuel before it got half way there.....think before you post

And does 400m drag in 10.2secs. That doesnt seem great. lol.

Please tell me that was sarcasm? 10.2 for an automatic production car that weighs more than the average SUV is bloody fantastic

Automatic? Err.... don't mistake the Veyron's non-driver operated clutch for a slush box ;)

More like a flash manual :P
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

If something other than the driver's left foot disengages the engine from the transmission - it's an automatic. All the fancy devices and computers in between don't change that fact.

So what about when someone just changes gear by slamming their box up a gear without using the clutch. Does their box suddenly become an automatic? :P

No it suddenly becomes a paperweight  The system still has a driver controlled method of disengaging the engine from the transmission.......whether it's used or not is a whole other story.

Yeah I know its an automatic, but you said it was quick for an automatic - so is the Rayglass Celica! ;)

I said it was quick for an automatic production car. The rayglass celica is purpose built to accelerate as quickly as possible over a 400m stretch. It's lightyears away from a gearbox that's designed to drive at 50km while having the legs to go to 400km/h

So what about things like rally cars, which have a clutch, but don't need to be used on shifts? You know, with the one, big paddle that you pull to change up, and push to change down?

The clutch on normal manual cars doesn't "need" to be used for shifting gears either...but it's there. If the rally car stops without the driver disengaging the clutch (or putting it in neutral).....it will stall. That's what cars with manual transmissions do. Whether you use the clutch or not is besides the point.

Interesting definition, but IMHO wrong. Manual simply refers to whether or not the driver determines when to change gears (hence manual mode on an otherwise automatic gearbox. It's got nothing to do with the use of clutches and who/what disengages them, it's got to do with who/what initiates the change of gear.

OOoo! I just spotted something I can use!

If the driver uses his RIGHT foot to disengage the clutch, does that make it an automatic? :D
