One of my favorites is the Hunua gorge road. There's a lot of awesome little country roads in South Auckland/North Waikato if you know where to look.

Only problem is it's a popular bike/walking spot too, plus you get the odd camper being the road to Larnach Castle.

If you want to drive some of NZ best roads at a actual fast speed without the risk of killing other people or getting caught speeding I can recommend Targa, Targa Tour is also great and IMHO about 75% the fun also and great value.

http://www.targa.co.nz/Targa-Tour_998.aspx

My favourite road is the Targa Special Stage that goes to Whangamomona.

This is a long video and does not do it justice but at pace on a closed road with no one coming the other way it was great, most Targa guys will say it’s the best stage of the week.

It’s cheaper than the cost of the life you take driving like a douche on public roads..

How can any tarmac road possibly qualify as "the best road ever" ???

The same way you probably qualify your favourite car as the best car ever, we all have different tastes and preferences.

Don’t see many people complaining about not having fun that's for sure

Must say a good gravel road stage is a blast in a good car though!

Whangamoas. A small section of a handful of corners up a hill near Nelson on SH6.

In the North Island. Twilight Rd, Clevedon.

Great road.. used to do the white bridge at the bottom of the Nelson side to the top in less than 5 mins in the old aw when the traffic was favourable

Going down that section from 'the skids' supervising a 16yo girl on her restricted in her EE80 Corolla in convoy ranks as the single scariest ride of my life (that didn't end out in a crash!), still sends a shiver down my spine remembering the brakes fade...

Now we are talking.

Great fun in a ST191 Corona - would be even better in something with more power and more wheel drive - if you know what I mean :P

Soo much gravel and camber and a small stone wall to stop you going for a cool down splash in the lake if you get it wrong. Loved every minute of it.

That really didn't look that quick to me, I wonder what speed he was doing ... but it only looked like about 20k faster than the traffic he was catching.

Its good value if you look at how many KM's you race, you will do more mileage in one week than four seasons of track racing.

There are guys that spend more on than I do on Targa on cars that just sit in a garage and never get driven properly at all.

Motorsorts is expensive but killing a member of the public playing boy racers is more so.
