I think th MG would a sweet first car, Kiwi4agze's son is a lucky bastard.

My first car was choice, it was a U12 bluebird SSS  with some sweet BBS wheels , but had to pay for the thing myself. I sold it to my brother after 3years who had it for 6months then it was nicked

If your budget is 12000, then buy him a corolla.
Cheap on insurance, nice to drive, cheap on petrol, unlike MG reliable, and if you want to buy him a faster car, 2ZZGE powered Corolla will be faster than the MG behemoth (assuming MG 190 is 190HP vehicle). And he will not look like total tool.

Good thing that you didn't get MG, you would be paying through the nose for the repairs on those, and they do break. The MGs are built very badly (by drunken poms).

what

Surely you didn't return the car as a result of what people said on the interwebs?

+1 to what BZG|bling said, someone who can afford to spend 12 k on a birthday present would have more common sense and decisiveness not to do what you just did

Sacrasim doesnt work too well on the internet does it...

There needs to be a sacrism button..

Got the money back, I had to put a deposit down so it could be held for a AA check, One thing I have learnt is Kiwi hospitality and customer service sucks ass. Employers here dont empower thier staff enough. She can see the AA inspection had not been done, all she had to do was tell me "the manager isnt in yet, i will ask him and call you back" but NO thats too hard.

More thinking towards a little Audi or VW hatch. Can i ask how the Bora is? Going to gilltrap today to see what they have in stock.

Any other recomendations for car yards in auckland. Not too keen on private sales as no warrenty and such but any recomendations would be good.

It needs to be a hatch, maybe 2L or under engine, he would like an auto but manaual is better for him, would like disc brakes not drums, airbags and atleast 4+ star safety and it has to look ok. Budget is $12,000 or there abouts.

Why don't you ask your son?

My opinion:
* BZ Touring Wagon - it's a baby wagon really. Cheap on gas, cheap to buy, you won't care when your son bangs and scraps it occasionally.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/toyota/bz/auction-412065835.htm (nothing good on trademe at the moment - but they can look really nice if done right).

* Honda Accord Euro R (older shape) - awesome looking interior (recaro seats). It's still 140odd-kw so not super fast.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/honda/accord/auction-412466753.htm

* Honda Civic or Honda Integra - something you wont care about him thrashing or knocking into things with.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/honda/civic/auction-412697834.htm
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/honda/integra/auction-413744797.htm
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/honda/integra/auction-409158119.htm

- buy something stock to give him incetive to stick mags, lower and tint the above plus parts are cheap and easy to come by.

Also Mazda SP20's: they look alright but the manuals only come in 4wd, so they're ultra-slow and he would a real hard time getting into trouble with it. Handle well and nice to drive IMO.
Give him a real awesome car when he graduates university or turns 21 or 30 or something. By then he'll know how to drive properly.

A 17 year old getting given a 12k car. $&#$% he is lucky.

My first car was an AE92 FXGT.
I worked my ass off at woolworths through highschool for that beast. Only sold it this year as i was in my second year of uni and couldnt justify having it.

Cost me 3 grand.

I am jelly.

A swift sports does sound good, but they are expensive for what you get tho.

There is a Hyundai GETZ GTi 1.4 manual 3dr. One of only 2 3dr Getz in NZ, has sports suspension system using Koni Sport Yellow shock absorbers (are they any good???) and Whiteline springs. Front 280mm slotted disc brakes with twin piston PBR calipers Rear 220mm slotted and drilled discs.
The standard 1.4L engine makes 100hp in stock form in the normal getz, but now makes 140hp.

140hp in a 910kg car has to be fun! The Hyundai dealership wants $11995 for it, you think its worth it?
