dont have anything solid yet but if we can get few cars together some of the car clubs will give us our own race program but we need to get numbers

an ae86 race series would be very cool indeed, this is exactly the sort of event i would like to compete in with how i am building my car up.
I was thinking a few weeks back after the 86 meet in auckland that if we were going to have a 86 meet with a track day, it would be cool to go further and make a series out of it.
Also there does seem to be a lot of older guys who have these cars and compete in club events and in the targa etc, so i would think there is a good base of cars to get it going.

tough to do with series though is it going to be a free for all ? ie forced induction with the n/a boys ? .. perhapse you could have the whole lot but run a weight penalty for power/engine type ?

Track day is a great idea.
Pukekohe is cheap to rent but numbers are essential otherwise its easy for the organiser to lose money.

I think a series is a good idea .. i would probalby even go watch it.

Since it'll be almost all ae85/86 we can do it on power to weight.
So you're really only competing against similar toughness cars, but get to see how other setups go on the track.

I also think it should be kept as a relatively open class sort of thing. Not too many restrictions for the different classes.

I don't own an AE86/AE85, but I have a suggestion.
Even though there will be FI/NA ones, they should all run together, and go by qualifying times, so an NA might be faster than an FI, so it goes ahead on the starting grid.

Dad was saying that in Pro 7 they put all the FD's at the front, and the fast guys in the old RX7's were keeping up and complaining, and it would of been better to sort them all by qual time, not power.

Only challenge will be comlying with MSNZ (???) and still letting everyone compete. Although I suppose, people will only compete in what they want to do.

I called Taupo and it was fully booked till end of December. I wanted to book for early Jan but the guy ask me to call closer to the time.

Anyway, we would need marshalls, fire extinguisher and etc.. usual stuff for the track.

Let me know if January is not good as i know a lot of people go to beaches or elsewhere and do family things.

I'm keen. sounds like a really good idea.

on the race day it could be a series of serious ae86/5 sprint races, and inbetween it could be open to others, like an open ae85/6 time so people who don't want to actually race can get on the track and test etc without as much risk to their car. also we could open it to other ppl (even hondas!) like a track day to help with numbers and lower the cost. but obviously keep the ae86s separate times on the track.

when i get back to nz i'll be keen to help out where i can to get things going. (couple of weeks)

by the way, the weather in rarotonga is hot and the water is warm and clear!! and i've only seen one trueno notch this wk,

this sounds like an excellent way to raise the value of ae85/86s
put them all on a race track, and racing being the dangerous sport that it is, after one series (esp. with inexperienced drivers) you should just about half the number of ae85s and ae86's in the country!

seriously though, if this is going to be a race series, rather than a one off, mostly uncompetitive track day, are any of you worried about the fact that it's very likely you'll do a fair bit of panel damage in a series of competitive racing, and possibly even completely write the car off? It would be a shame to see a pile up destroying 3 or 4 cars that have been painstakingly built up by their owners over a couple of years.
