This is due to the bearings at the front of the box being located by the face of the bellhousing... bigger/smaller bearings won't be held in place properly and the shims won't fit either.
do you mean there would be movement between the bearing on the input shaft and the bellhousing?
reason I'm asking this is my "rebuilt" gearbox sh*t itself the other day for no reason. it did have a slight whine when it was idling and in 5th other than that it was fine. my problem was the first synchro cone on my input shaft has spun and worn down, hence the gearbox trying to select two gears at once (or something to that effect).
i had someone look at it and they think it looks like there was movement between my input shaft bearing and bellhousing, which allowed my synchro cone to have play and spin. make sense?
ive got a 20 spline box, and im pretty sure I got an ae86 bellhousing [thats what its got written on it anyway]. so is this what my problem would be? would it work if I machined up a shim or something to fit that bellhousing to my gearbox? (keeping in mind my dad is an engineer/welder/machinist so machining isnt an issue).
just as a side note - would it work if I swapped my input shaft with a 22 spline shaft and kept that bellhousing?
sidenote #2: i've got a spare t50 with 21 teeth on the input shaft. how is this possible? I thought it was only 20 or 22. i counted it again and again to make sure i wasn't wrong, and it was definitely 21.
