If your car is written off by insurance company do you still get first option to buy it or are they sent straight to auction ?. Has anybody doe this recently.

Will depend on your insurance company, only they can answer this. Remember once a car is an insurance writeoff you have not much chance of getting it road legal again without a lot of money so I hope you only want parts.

When my gti was written off a few months back i was with state and had the option of buying the wreck for $300. I had nowhere to store it so i didn't and it was sold off at turners. I was on third party/fire/theft but got covered by the 'protection from uninsured drivers' part of the policy. Got paid out $3500 and it was going to to cost $5000+ to repair. Would have had to have gone on the chassis machine so I figured it wasn't worth it. The biggest problem with buying the wreck if you want to fix it is usually the insurance company will want to deregister it. If you just want the parts you shouldn't have too many problems, you'll just need to get it transported.

Don't generally have 1st option unless you ask for it when making your claim, and even then they are most likely to charge you more than what it would probably go for at auction - depending on whats wrong with it.
When my gts4 was written off a few months back i asked for a buy back option and they said they would charge me half of what i was getting in insurance for it and when i asked for the same auction on my surf about a month later they said yup, didn't tell me a price and didn't hear from them untill i rung them up after seeing the car going south on the back of a tow truck - and i hadn't even been paid for the thing yet.

So best option will be to ask them where it is going to be auctioned and hope that some wrecker doesn't want it more than you do
