Fines and demerits for 'overly noisey cars', The best part is ladies and gentlemen is how they judge how overly noisey a car is,

'There was no existing legal test of what constituted a noisy vehicle so individual officers had to make their own assessment'

Oh, $&#$% joy.

And there still isn't.

But seriously, is it really necessary to have a big, loud exhaust on your modified car? There are plenty of systems out there that sound nice to the ear whilst not making excessive amounts of noise... it is a courtesy to think of how your actions could impact on the well-being of others. And personally speaking I prefer driving a car in which I can hold a conversation at 100km/h without having to shout at my passengers to be heard  And I believe that by tuning the different elements in your exhaust system (correct size mufflers, correct positioning etc) you don't even need to restrict the flow (and thus lose power) in order to quieten the car.

(And no, I can't really preach... my FXGT rally car is too noisy so I've got to add another muffler to it  . In the meantime I'm keeping it under 3000rpm whilst driving it on the road to avoid its ear-shattering resonance)
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

$&#$%

I wonder how many demerit points it is 8O 8O

BUT what happened to the last noisy exhaust law??

The lazy pigs were to lazy

But they should just focus on the raspy, unnessecarily loud hondas,20v's, old starlets etc. I think they just want there car to be loud, they dont want it to sound nice

Its 10 demerits.

Amazingly I've never been pulled over for my car  The car that made me temporarily deaf when I arrived in Auckland for megameet.

IMO if you arent driving like a tosser or doing anything wrong I doubt you will get pulled over. I've had several police cars stopped behind/infront/beside me at all times of day and I'm yet to be pulled over for being too noisy.

it's pretty simple really.

if you have an excessively noisy car , muffle the sound

if you are an attention seeking tosser, you'll get the attention you deserve and fines to match

my Levin isn't quiet , but i don't drive it on public roads except to and from events or to action repairs, and certainly try to aviod trying in a manner to attract the Police.

to make it simpler if you have a excessively noisy car and you rev the shit out of it its a matter of time till you get caught

if you dont want a fine then dont rev the shit out of the car and drive sensibly

Hmm interesting about what they say about different times of the day being a different level of noisyness, makes quite a bit of sense really. How many people do you know who complain about people being driven up the wall by cars with excessively loud exhausts going by there house from bout 11pm on friday night till bout 4 then again saturday - trust me when i say it sucks. Think i used to be on boy racer express way, you'd hear a pair of cars take off from the lights obviously racing then come down my street turn off ino the street opposite my house go up the road a litle more turn again and be back turn ing left to go back into town. I used to be able to count how many times 5 or 6 particular cars went past my house every night - just cos they were the loudest and most identifiable and not one v-tec or 20v amongst them, was 2 x vr4's, one evo 2 rex's 4 skylines and a primera.

So i say it's a good idea, so long as they don't change the daytime limit as well, and have a cut off point of around 10pm for people who are driving causing excessive noise after that, and you generally know if your causing excesive noise and there really is no need for it imho. If your exhaust is that loud that you can't drive without causing excessive noise don't drive after 10 untill you get it fixed, there aren't all that many good reasons for driving after 10 anyhow - and most of the people who are doing the complaining probably can't legally drive after then yet and by the time they can may have realised (fingers crossed) that noise does not = power in all situations

define Big and Loud.

im happy to comply with any non-objectional type of test, if its just based on judgement of X person then $&#$% that for a fair and just legal system..
If it get done ill take it to court and ask if the officers ears have been calibrated recently.

Do you get the 10 points/fine before or after you prove that your within the legal noise standards?

Suck's ball's really as said above just got to catch a cop on a bad day!! They never seem to pull bike's up for being too loud so i'll be sweet anyway :D The Accord isn't loud either so all good

"Heres the letter i sent, i no it is a bit smartass and not the best but yeh i was pretty pissed.

just a quick comment about the so called "noisey exhuasts". So like many of
the other laws that have been introduced are these going to be enforced on
people who you see fit the catergory of a boyracer?. So your fellow age
group who drive v8's and harleys which are louder with a stock exhaust than
some of the jappas are with aftermarket ones be exempt from this law? Could
you also please tell me when noisey exhausts killed 20 people over the
holidays.

Cheers
Chris"

And heres the reply

"I do not quite understand your comment about our
"fellow age group" as the age of front-line police officers ranges from
early 20's to mid 50's, as does the age of offenders, although it is fair
to say that most, who offend against the noise regulations are generally
younger and less mature.

There are a range of traffic laws that police enforce that are not trauma
promoting, but are none the less legal requirements. Noisy vehicles and
operating a vehicle in a noisy manner are just some of those.

Police receive a significant number of complaints daily from the public,
hoteliers, moteliers, etc., about noisy motor vehicles and vehicles that
are being operated in a noisy manner. I am quite positive in the knowledge
that if any person of any age group were to drive their V8 car or Harley
Davidson motorcycle around and around city streets during the early hours
of the morning, with the stereo cranked up loud and creating excessive
noise, either by way of the equipment in the vehicle or the manner of
operation, and complaints were received or a police patrol happened to
observe this activity, that they would be dealt in an equal fashion. The
term 'boy racer' does not truly reflect the complete spectrum of such
offenders, although there is a correlation between drivers who commit
offences against the Illegal Street Racer legislation and who breach noise
regulations..

The government has recently publicly stated that Land Transport New Zealand
and the Ministry of Transport are working on bringing in tougher standards
to deal with noisy motor vehicles and the setting of noise level standards.
Police have always had the power to enforce noisy motor vehicle offences
and operating a vehicle in a noisy manner. This legislation long pre-dates
the Illegal Street Racer legislation. The Illegal Street racer legislation
was promulgated to deal more effectively with a quite separate group of
more serious law breakers.

I hope this will assist you on this matter.

Law is the same as all the other talk before it - its a useful way to ping some little tards who are deserving a ticket, but can't be pinged that much... Demerits hurt more than fines in some cases.

I don't care anymore. I put my silencer back in last night.

It was a weird feeling driving it today... I could hear all the rattles and squeals everything else makes...
