when changing an engine...

Postby JT » Tue Aug 08, 2006 3:47 pm

... pull the clutch and pp off even if they look sweet, especially if you don't know how long engine has been sitting

My corona blew up on the way back from dunedin, bearing for no. 1 rod wasn't very healthy. Engine was pretty tired anyway so got another engine out of the paper with a radiator for $110 :)

Clutch and pp looked in better condition than the one on my old engine so I left it on there and put gearbox back on and into the car it went. Engine ran sweet but couldn't get it in gear, turned it over on the starter in gear and could crunch through gears but clutch wasn't disengaging. Figured it's stuck to pp or flywheel so tried starting in gear with foot on clutch and brake but wasn't releasing. Pulled gearbox back off and clutch was rusted to pp, good whack was all that needed to come off but it was pretty screwed. Anyone got some similar stories where not checking something simple wasted a lot more time?

Yea I remember a similar thing happen to me once when changing the engine in the Supra.

Did engine change and gearbox etc and started car and clutch didn't want to engage. Pulled the gearbox off again and found that the pivot was still on the other bellhousing. :?

Everything back together and tried again and still no go. Pulled gearbox out again and this time found the clutch fork had come loose from the release bearing.

Thought we'd have it a third time lucky but the Slave seized for some reason.

Lots of angry words were used that day!! :P

Thats a real bad day in the garage!

Random thing with mine was I thought it was just the slave, seal was stuffed and no fluid left when we got the car back home after blowing up. Forgot about it until finished engine swap so figured it would just be a 5 min job and a new slave but no the clutch had other ideas, stupid fwd daily drivers

No this is after the mishap at your house.
This happned when I had to put the new engine in at Chelles' house.

Engine blowing up your house after we did the initial manual conversion is a whole different story. Always remember to check your oil kiddies!!! :P

I have a slightly different tack.

I put a cheap, standard 1500 motor in my Alfa as a temporary replacement between holing a piston on my original motor, and doing the 1.7l conversion. A mate came round and helped me do the final few touches, including reinstalling the crossmember, connecting all the ancillaries such as hoses, wires, driveshafts etc.

Anyway, I neglected to check his workmanship, and driving down Tremaine Ave in Palmy one sunny afternoon, my LHS driveshaft parted company quite spectacularly from the output flange on the gearbox, causing a grinding, screaming, and debris ridden halt.

THAT caused a reasonable amount of time to be wasted.... on the roadside swapping a driveshaft.... fun and games.

I have a story just like that too!

Was on a TS cruise 9out to a party out the back of auckland and dropped a shaft cos when i put the engine back in didnt bolt the flanges up - only finger tight. even got a damnm bee sting when we went back the next day to get it back :o - just in time before the tow truck was there as the tree hugging locals thought i was ditching it !! :o

When I swapped gearboxes in the wagon, the release bearing on the new box looked alright, and spun freer than the old one did, so I left it in.
Now I've got a whiny ass release bearing cause I couldnt be naffed taking 2 minutes swapping them.

Ken and I would have put the engine in and out of the Bunderson 1/2 a dozen times the first time we bolted it to the Rose transaxle. Every time we would be forced to grind a little more off the bellhousing to clear the cover... lengthy PITA.

I win

Had some mates helping me swap engines in a VR4.

All went to plan, no worries at all, until 2 days later... They had neglected to seal up the transfer case properly after they opened it to change the oil, hence it became starved of oil, overheated and seized up, then the thing decided to blow in half at 110 km/h - as I was slowing down from around the far end of the speedo. Resulting in the driveshaft bouncing all over the road and punching holes in the trans tunnel of my car when it tried to come up and say "hi" to me.

Left a few nice dents in the road... Lucky it didn't dig in at any point and try to flip the car end over end or happen about 5 seconds earlier :?

My turn to add to the list now...

Swap 7M-GTE from aerotop to hardtop, put in new waterpump, waterpump gasket, thermostat...

Break off thermostat housing bolt... ok so go buy new one... try to start car, won't fire... stupid typical supra wiring fault... run wire off starter, eventually get car going... waterpump leaks...

Next day start car to take brother to school, it dumps its all oil all over the garage floor... stupid factory hose clamps...

Remove and re-goop waterpump, replace hose clamps with half decent ones, go for drive up road... try to figure out what strange knocking noise is... remember (when you're about 5km from home) that you forgot to tighten the wheel nuts on the front wheels when you dropped the car back down and have no tools in the car to do it where you are... ensue a very cautious 50kph drive back home...

Take car for drive again, find out it has another typical supra fault, crack in x-member where PS rack bolts to... causing first 1/4 turn in either direction to be non-effective...

Take car for wof... passes anyway...

First night out... speedo cable disconnects somewhere along line... no longer have any speedo...

Who wants to guess what will be next? :D
