boost controllers

Postby sigma » Tue Aug 15, 2006 11:20 pm

What sort of boost controller do you run in your car and how happy are you with it? Ive been looking at a few, namely the GFB bleed valve and the similar turbosmart item, but have heard that these cause spiking and drop off in psi at high rpm. Thoughts?

EBC is the way to go...ALWAYS

I've got a GReddy Profec B Spec II and am very happy with it.

Nothing is better than EBC. but I would stay away from EBC without digital control (ie just 2 knobs for high and low boost adjustments) - they are crap.

the only problem is that it is too big and shiny and atracts the unwanted attention...

Ill second that. Maintains very consistent boost. Easy to install and operate. Seems to work well with external wastegate.

I have BLITZ DSBC SpecR, and I'm happy with it too, nice scramble function to spool up the turbo...

HKS EVC, it has been rumoured amongst a few Nissan drifters that it's got better and more agressive control over the AVC-R, and lets you spool earlier
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

I have Greddy profec spec b 11, i am happy with it on the road, holds lowa nd high boost of 0.9 and 1.15 bar well but at the drags it won't let me go past 1.0 for some reason (possibly heat soak????)

other than that it is excellent.

You can unplug the " Unwanted attention " of the AVCR control unit tho and put it in your pocket from the factory plug on the loom.

Not only is it easy to use has over boost scramble and instant spool at high boost

Why bolt a AVC to you dash when you can mount a HKS ECV-IV like this cant nick what ya cant see

using an Atomic GFB MBC. Seems in my case to work much better than the ball and spring one that came with the car. Doesnt have a boost creep problem anymore. Very easy to make minor adjustments. I would however say going to an EBC is your best bet, however i have other stuff to waste $400+ on, lol.

Great thread

I have a GReedy Profec A
I have one of these
Image

And on high boost (1.2bar as seen in pic), I want it to come on boost more gradually.

ImageHere is my dyno plot, with the boost graph at the very bottom
The green line is standard boost (13psi) with the EBC turned off, and the blue and red line are on high boost.

So, the three little dials it have at the front read
RATIO, TIME, OFFSET

Can you adjust the spool time?

So anyway, now the greedy is only boosting standard boost no matter what the knob is set at. Have temporarily bypassed the ebc solenoid with a tap. And the turbo spool is soooo much better, puts you into your seat so much more. Why is this, And if i replace my ebc with a newer one, how can i make sure this gain? or spool time? will be similar to a tap.

Was looking at the type s Greedy, the avcr *expensive* and others.

I have a turbosmart mbc. Its a ball and spring one, not just a tap. With a ratcheted adjustment.

Once you set it up for your car its fine, i have run my ct26 at both 15 and 13 PSI, and it doesnt spike at all. The car doesnt hold this boost all the way to the redline but thats not the controllers fault :?

I've tried damn near everything under the sun in the past couple years :?

T - Piece bleeding off - raises boost but spikes
GFB atomic - Same deal
T/S ratcheted thingy - Better but still not great

Then stepped up to an AVC-R - Absolutely f$#kin wicked, hard to setup but once done its amazing. Could set it up to make people think I had sequential twin turbos + all kinds of crazy stuff  I couldn't justify the $$ with my current car though - $750+ for a boost controller is halfway to a standalone ECU or single turbo swap :x

Currently using the Gizzmo MS-IBC, I highly reccomend it for the price, its juuuust been released in NZ. Has closed loop control (watches boost levels and tries to maintain them), multi scramble is very handy...

"I'm losing!" *start hammering the button until I'm winning*

Also has features like a spike stop (for if you do suffer from boost spiking), 6 boost memories, and it looks bling bling without standing out when the car is turned off.

I jsut have a nexternal wasteagate and use one of those Turbosamrt Taps, works really well, doesnt creep, doesn't spike..holds steady...thats probably due to the external though:P although it worked fine when it was still stock actuator/gate too...

sorry for the bump.
I didnt get my boost controller sorted. Half-pie looking for a new one.

Must have
Adjustable gain
A screen of some sort, LED, LCD etc
Ok for high boost,18psi ish
Actuator type wastegate

Whats that boost scramble function? Will i be able to get a EBC to spool up the same way a tap does? Ie, naturally untill boost limit, sort of hard to explain, but it it was on a graph, the boost plot would go up linear.

Low dollars would be best, but consider all.

Recommend it for the price of...

I run the Link boost control,
and well, it works. thats about all.
but it's an early version.

Looking into others as I really need to get rid of the boost spike as i run in a boost controlled class that runs an electronic boost measurement device.
