Which one to purchase? 96 TT RZ MANUAL or 99 TT RZ Tip

Postby TEMPTN » Mon Dec 18, 2006 1:45 am

I'm in a little bit of a dilemma.
I've driven an absoluely mint condition titanium/grey 99 Rz-s with vvti etc, bomex front, factory sideskirts and caps50000kms round the $25k mark,
the problem is i've discovered a 96 rz 6 speed manual, well looked after in red, has big brakes etc and is preface lift, no body kit. This ones about $22k however has 105kms on the clock.

I'm just not sure which one to go for.... i should have set up a poll but i need suggestions etc.

My theory is the cost of a manual conversion on the late model supra would be several grand incl upgraded clutch, where as i could use that mony to rebuild the engine on the higher km one at a later date.
The other thing is getting a hold of a v161 gear box to match up with the vvti block.

At this stage i'm leaning more towards the red one, how ever doing my research as we speak so see how we go.

Any uggestions would be uch appreciated.

what do you want to use it for? you're the one who has to live with it.

some cars arent that bad as a manual. generally torquey cars like supras are well suited to auto boxes. if you're going to be lumbering up and down the country autos are great. i also know of a supra being used as a track car with good results on the auto box. the 6speed is a good piece of kit tho , so i guess its just personal preference.

If your thinking about manual conversion get the 6-speed I think you'll be better off as a manual conversion will cost you alot of $$$ and its not a straight bolt up also finding a 6-speed box will be a mission as well.What you'll find though performance wise there's not a great deal of difference between the 2 especially if your running the factory setup with basic upgrades i.e FMIC Boost control filter and exhaust.On the Auto/Trip-tronic side there's not much wrong there either there strong reliable cars and can handle a fair bit of power.The reason in a Supra why you can get away with a Auto is the spread of Torque through the rev range,you get boost from 2000 rpm and then it's pretty much continual torque to 6000 rpm with the redline at 6800 so this is a good thing only a little flat spot at about 3800 rpm when the turbo's come on line together.

The best thing you'll find is the big brakes there's just not alot out there better.I also no a guy in Wgtn who has 2 6-speeds for sale one is a 96 Royal Sapphire Pearl RZ with 18x10 and 18x9 big brakes Recaro seats absolutely mint with 70 0dd Ks on the clock also has a 99 6-speed white big brakes Silver Volk CE 28 wheels RZ VVTI motor.I think for the 96 he also wants $25 k but for the 99 he wants closer to $30 K.

I currrently own a BF xr6 turbo with the auto box and i dont mind it, the reason why i want a supra is because i cannot mod the ford for another 2 years once the warranty runsout. I guess i want the closest thing to it and have decided i want the supra. i drove a manual one but it wasnt that great, the auto was very smooth.

I plan to go with single turbo sconvrsionsomething like a gt35r, aiming for around 350kw at the wheels. I guess the purpose or this car is to have a quick weekend cruiser.

I had a kind of similar problem when I was choosing mine, I ended up with the manual and I'm glad I did.

Go for the manual one! :)

Dont get me wrong i have no problem with the auto, but my theory is sports car should be a manual. However the tiptronic one is just so so mint. What a dillema.

I'm trying to make this descision before the 21st of next month as i'm trying to get it for my 24th birthday :), if not i'll buy one for my 25th but more likely going for the r34 Gtr by then :lol:

if you plan on modding it, get the earlier 6spd. If you're planning on keeping it stock, there's more reason to get the newer tiptronic.

Assuming the early one has been well looked after, 105kms is nothing. My supra has done 150kms now and is mechanically perfect (previous owners drove like nanas and spent big $$$ on servicing etc).

i love my 6speed its great and it still pulls well from 100kph in 6th.
i think real sports cars have to be manual but thats just me.
if you go auto then change it to manual the dash etc is still a auto
one. so unless you get a full frount cut, motor, box etc to get all the
parts to change over its never going to look rite.

Mate if you want to do away with the factory setup well then its a no brainer as the 6-speed is definitely the way to go 350 RWKW will destroy the factory auto if you abuse it enough but on the other hand the 6-speed will handle this power with ease and the only thing you'll have to upgrade then is the clutch where as if you went down the Auto path you'd have to really get the Auto built and strengthened again big $$$.

manual = open road fun
auto = traffic
