Caldina GT-T questions: i)cold air induction kit ii) VSC

Postby Mark H » Thu Jan 04, 2007 8:00 pm

Hi all

Just wondering whether any GT-T owners could advise on the following questions:

1) Fivebob noted in a previous reply that the VSC on a GT-T only relies on engine management, and does not also apply the brakes to keep the vehicle on its intended course. Is this correct? (I've currently got an Avensis wagon with VSC, which uses both engine and braking management. Thus, I assumed that the GT-T would have the same system).

2) When I eventually get a GT-T, I want to install a cold air induction kit to get a bit more power. Does anyone know where I can buy one of these, how much they cost, and how fiddly they are to install? What about peoples' experiences with this modification: does it make a decent difference?

Thanks

Mark.

fivebob is one of the better assets around here. Especially when it comes to the 3s-gte/st215. I would take his word to be fact.

the done way for cold air systems on gtt's tend to be to use an aftermarket panel filter in the factory airbox.

they have the slight pita of the battery being directly in line with the comp housing inlet, and factory use a s shaped elbow from the standard ducted air box that seems to be reasonably effective.

do a quick search on caldina gtt modifications and you should find heaps of do's and do nots. they can be quite sensitive if you go blindly turning up the boost on them, but rewarding if done properly or left standard.
they are kinda like natural selection for negligent car owners

panel filter in the stock airbox is what i have.

The get air from both behind the headlight, and up through the guard from memory (intake pipe before airbox has two inlets)

gets too hot in there for a pod without a decent box around it. Im using a simota filter, K&N too pricey for me
I had vtax :(

It may not be fact in this case, just the observations I made when stripping one of my wrecked Caldinas. There is no pressure accumulator for the braking system, so applying the brakes does not seem to be a function of the system. :?

However after reviewing the wiring diagrams and fault codes it seems that the ABS may play a part in the VSC system (they are controlled by the same computer), but I'm not exactly sure if this has anything to do with a "power on" scenario, or is just active when the brakes are applied. i.e. it uses the Yaw rate sensor to activate the ABS to control a potential spin while braking.

Perhaps a closer inspection of the ABS unit is in order, if I remember next time I'm in the workshop.

vsc is effected by use of differential braking to control excessive yaw. I believe it to only be armed over 10 kph, and surprisingly effective. (wet ts track day, centenial park) It does tend to have a crack at stopping handbrake turns by braking the outside front, so beware.

RE CAI

how handy are you with PVC and a little mechanical nouse ?

Stick with your stock airbox with a high quality filter insert ( TRD , K + N whatever ) then run a cold " ram style " feed via the front either from behind the lights , or down behind the guard to the front of the car

Ive done a couple of these with Gt4's and celicas in the past , takes less than an afternnon for a little bit more gain

Outside of that - relocate the battery to the back and associated corner items , and run a straight intake pipe off the turbo to a well shielded , and supplied pod filter behind the passenger headlights ..

Do the caldinas have a factory fitted BOV plumbed back into the intake piping ?? you may need to work around this if you choose a straight path induction , but once again its not overly hard if your prepared to get your hands dirty!

VSC, etc.

Hmmm...some good suggestions, thank you. I've since discovered that such mods would void the sig class warranty on the Caldina. I'll have to save them for when the warranty expires!

Cheers

probably the best idea

Check with the warranty guys - you may find that TRD parts are still ok , as they are still and OEM part - ie toyota made it ..
