Best bet is to go along to an event or better still to your local car club and see what other people have been doing. You will find that there is a huge amount of info and advice that people will share with you.

As pointed out, the MotorSport NZ website has all the info you need re vehicle requirements - look under regulations, there are PDFs of each section of the MotorSport Manual.

Specifically, you'll need to look at Schedule A (safety) with regards to the safety requirements for the vehicle - items such as rollcage construction, seatbelts, helmets, overalls, first aid kit, fire extinguishers, mudflaps etc. If your vehicle is a turbo then you might also need to put a restrictor on it. This will give you the baseline requirements you'll need to go rallying. If in doubt about the rules then talk to Leon.

Then there are the extra bits that make the car better to drive and be in, such as intercoms, terratrips, under body protection, suspension etc etc. For that type of thing you're probably better off searching the web for examples of rally vehicles and looking at what has been done to them (try searching for 'rally preparation'), or even better go along to local club events to look at some cars and chat to the members to see what they recommend. For me the 3 most essential changes I made to my car to do a rally (vs doing club events) were:
* terratrip - this is essential for the co-driver so they can navigate
* an intercom unit - eliminates the need to shout, and you can also more easily tell when the co-driver is starting to get scared and perhaps take the hint :D
* drink bottle holder - club events you are returning to the pit area every 10 mins or so but on a rally you might not see your crew for a couple of hours. Take plenty of water, you'll need it.

Any specific questions ask away, there are a few rally boys (and girls) here who will be happy to help.
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

add to that a bunch of silly ppl who will stand around for hours on end in silly locations/conditions waiting to fix the muck ups you make to the car :D

as mentioned.... go along to some events, see if you can help crew for someone, that will show you many many things you never thought of

the most important thing in a rallycar for your first rally, is either a pretty good knowledge of the stages, or an experienced navigator. the rallies i have done, i was unlucky enough to have been the arrow crew on the local for 12 years, so i knew the stages , the other rally, i had their previous arrow crew member beside me. a wee bit of local knowedge goes a very long way.
I've been a bad bad boy. I should read the rules and behave before I get spanked by an admin

f#@k you i won't do what ya tell me

as stated, go along to your local clubsport event, ie: a hillclimb, sealed sprint etc. take a look at others car. different level of rallying has different requirements. would look at a homologated cage, harness, extinguisher, seats and go from there. all about safety these days  extras, ie: mOnStA TachoS! and Phat az terra-tripZ etc depending on budget and how far you want to take it :)

Actually i think you probably find that for pretty much any event, if you have a cage it has to be homologated, fire extinguisher requirements are based on engine size but presonally i would carry the biggest one i could comfortably fit in there. For seats try a whole lot of different ones before you buy anything and, this sounds silly but so many people get it wrong 1st time round, get something you will be comfortable in for long periods of time otherwise you will be changing them later. Make sure you buy brand new belts, worth the extra dollars for peace of mind, expiry etc.
As some one said up top if you go rallying you will need a trip computer, really you do want an intercom, you have no idea how noisy it is inside the car till you've done it, or how hard it is to hear words through your helmet. Also 1st aid kit is a must and the list goes on although it doesn't really extend to a monsta tacho 8O

Delivered? I hope you are meaning just the steel... and not a bolt in cage for the car.. because they are a big no-no for rally. (The new rulke change for bolt-in cages only covers club-sport basic AFAIK).

No. One size for race or clubsport. Twice that size for rally (because you might be a long way from the nearest person to put out the fire).

I had a lovely reply to this last night, but the forum ate my reply. So the highlights were

1) Bolt in cages can in fact be homologated
2) JDM bolt in cages can't, because they are badly designed.
3) Don't bring a car with a JDM bolt in nasty to any event I run, because you'll be pointed firmly in the direction of the nearest lake with instructions that involve jumping into it.
4) I am yet to see a JDM bolt in that I wouldn't describe as being "utter crap" and I've seen lots of them.

That's all to do with the Atom is it? Was talking to a guy at BBT a few years back and he said they were trying to get the rules changed specifically for Atoms so you could have a bolt in cage for targa and the likes.

Nope, not at all. We don't change an entire set of rules, to cater for one car (that has never competed). So you've been told mincie pies there.

You have always since day 1 been able to homologate a bolt in structure. But, you need to do it right. There's pages of this in the motorsport manual, for anyone who cares enough to open the book. Pages 156 -158 inclusive are packed with the different types of approved joints, and page 128 says which joint you can use and where.

Doesn't the cage have to be homologated with the vehicle? or am I being a nub here?

It's homologated in to a particular car yup.

So it definitely isn't safe to assume that you can take a cage, and put it into another car and assume you can use it. If a cage was homologated into a car in 1994, and you take it out and put it into another car in 2007. The cage may require upgrading to the 2007 regs.
