All Classic Japanese Series

Postby postfach » Mon Feb 16, 2009 11:02 am

A few of you indicated some interest in this series in my thread about pre 89 1UZ's (which I discovered don't exist, thanks for your help). I've received an email today with amended rules, so I figured I'll share them with you so you can get a bit more info.

1.There will be three classes competing within the races: 0 – 1600 cc (Group 1), 1601 cc and over (Group 2) and open class (Group 3) factory turbo charged cars and rotaries.
2.All cars must be at least 20 years old and this will be a rolling 20 years i.e. 2009 – cars must be pre 1989 and manufactured in Japan.
3.No 4.W.D. (four wheel drive) will be allowed regardless of being standard factory fitment.
4.Vehicles must be a recognised production car of one hundred or more units.
5.Replicas are allowed.
6.Original body shape must be retained.
7.Only period spoilers may be used.
8.Tyres and wheel sizes are free but must fit under the original guards.
9.Original glass must be fitted – no lexan or perspex.
10.No flares unless they were a factory option.
11. Only D.O.T tyres can be used – no race/ wet slick tyres will be allowed.
12. Front and rear suspension must be of the original design.
13.Original suspension points must be retained – coil overs will be allowed.
14.Brakes are free.
15.Composite panels may be used but only if originals are no longer available – all cars must weigh in at a minimum of 90% of their factory curb weight.
16.A roll cage to MSNZ specifications must be fitted.
17.Interior trim may be removed but door cavities must be covered. Aftermarket dashes may be used. An approved race seat and harnesses must be used. Passenger and rear seats are not required.
18.Engines must be of original fitment – no hybrids. No late model engines can be fitted. Engines must be in the original location.
19.Only factory fitted turbo charged vehicles allowed – after market turbo’s can be used.
20.Fuel injection can be used if a standard factory fitment.
21.Engine modifications are free.
22.Only pump and race gas (aviation fuel) can be used.
23.Batteries can be relocated.
24.Gearboxes may be a maximum of 5 (five) forward gears.
25.No sequential gearboxes or shifters are allowed.
26.It is the requirement of the competitor to supply all relevant information to support the eligibility of the competing car. If supporting information is not supplied, the application can be declined.
27.Only financial members can compete.
28.Dispensation can be granted to members/competitors at the committee’s discression.
29.Cars cannot compete within the series if they do not comply with the rules.
30.Cars will be scrutineered to ensure eligibility.
31.The quickest lap time for Pukekohe Park Raceway will be 1 min 7 seconds. Cars that lap quicker than this time may be excluded from the series.

Items in red are rules that have been amended since the last release.

There will be three classes competing within the series. These will be 0 – 1600 cc, 1601 cc and over and open class (factory turbo charged cars and rotaries).

There will be three races per meeting made up of the following format:
1 x Practice session.

Who is the controlling club for this series?

Is it TACCOC or another club?

Also come next year the Z32 will be eligible and that should put the cat among the piegons :)

That makes it even more appealing with the rolling age limit on cars. Is it to be north island based only to start with? Would love to do something lke this if they had it in the main land.

The issue with rolling is you build a car for it and then next season something else becomes valid for the series and you go from competative to not in a heartbeat.

The minimum lap time is also a pain as you can go so far then it becomes about minimising mistakes and driving to a time rather than driving hard.

Well I guess the minimum lap time is there to help with teh "one year competitive, the next your nowhere" type of scenario. It makes a level playing field, and should produce some good racing. Stops those with large amounts of cash just whipping the fields with there 7-800 horsepower motors. Even when the newer cars come into it, a 1.07 is still a 1.07.

A question for those who have had track days at Puke, what sort of machine is required to run a 1.07? What would a standard MR2 for arguments sake be capable of running?

Should be an interesting series. I do like the idea of having a minimum lap time, as it can easily be amended as the series progresses to ensure parity as more cars become eligible. Any confirmed dates?

17 odd years ago a similar set of rules were tabled and the SS2000 class came about............

This looks essentially to be a japanese version of the muscle car rules. Should be a good class to watch and or compete in.

If you think adding a Z32 will throw a cat amongst the pidgeons. What if someone fronts up with a Honda NSX next year.......................???????

EP82 GT starlets would be allowed in, first made in 1989

1.07 is fair moving around pukekohe if they want to keep it fairly affordable

1.07 is pretty quick, should make for some pretty exciting racing. I reckon it will be good fun to watch, too. I'm not sure when the series starts, hopefully I can get a car ready in time.

Yeh thats quite disappointing, rules out ALOT of cars, didnt think that they would have any advantage in a fixed lap time race.

what about something like a r32 gtr (when did they come out?) but running a 2wd gearbox? i don't think it mentioned anything about gearbox swaps, just that engine swaps weren't allowed?

also next year the jza70 were released in 1990, so next year they would be elegible as well, would take very little to make one of those competitive.

it says no flares to bodywork, what about pumping or rolling the guards? mind you 10" rims fit under the factory widebody guards on the back of a jza70, so that should be big enough, haha.

that sounds great... but i fail on

9 - going to be really hard to change side windows back to glass
15 - could be rectified by adding ballast
18 - engine is in the original location but not original fitment

looks like a great series though, still alot of parts on the car that are "free" to be played with that will hold the interest of many

1.07 is pretty fast on road rubber TBH.

220BHP Ariel Atom with a pro at the wheel did a 1.02 so add 5 seconds to that is still a quick lap.

One question I would have is, they have a lap time limit at pukekohe. But what is to stop someone turning down thw power for that race to achieve the lap time, only to go to th enext round and wind the wick back up?

They will set minimum times for each track as they visit.

So it might me.

Puke 1.07
Taupo National 1.48
Manfield 1.24
etc.......

so basically it has to be a standard as old car BUT has to have roll cage? who does that?... if your going to bother putting in a cage then you would want to upgrade everything else too. apart from that it seems like a really good idea!
