Subaru Legacy EJ25 Fuel Consumption

Anyone own/owned/driven one of these beats?
My mrs just brought a '95 BG9 Grand Wagon auto with 166K for 2.5K. She wants it for snow boarding over the winter.
We took it over to the west coast over easter. For a 2.5L it was really gutless & chewed the gas even more than I'd expected for an auto 4WD. It barley gets 400K to a tank. A BA Falcon 4spd wagon will get @450k combined. Is this just how they are or do you think there could potentially be something wrong. I was thinking maybe dirty MAF sensor or the likes. Air filter was ok. Needs an oil change though.

They are ruinously thirsty - I don't know the exact consumption figures, but do know that they are heavy, boaty, slow and thirsty.

Don't get me wrong, they're a nice enough car, very capable in the snow and probably quite a good buy for 2500 - they just chew through the fuel.

Just been doing a bit of a google search & I've seen figures like 21-26 MPG being thrown around Oh a whopping great 165hp from the EJ25, & possibly only 155hp in auto form
Wasn't to much of a boat to drive but didn't feel very stable at 120-130 overtaking.

My old 2.2 BG7 Legacy wasn't too bad on fuel, seemed just like any other average 2-2.5L car, although mine was manual and NZ-new (so SOHC) which might have helped a little

According to this site http://english.auto.vl.ru/catalog/subar ... 5_8/28472/ it's specs are 160PS and should average 10.2L/100km for the automatic model - so with the 60L tank it has, it should easily get 450kms out of a fill, especially on the open road.

Definitely give it a service, new oil and filter, change air filter anyway, check that none of the brakes are dragging, check tyre pressures - if the tyres are below 25psi it will definitely be a main contributing factor to high fuel consumption, also take out any unnecessary weight out of the car, if it has roof racks take them off when there's no snowboards on them, make sure auto trans is going into lock-up mode at highway speeds, give the car a wheel alignment, run it on the highest octane possible etc

funnily enough Ive heard its quite common for the N/A legacy's to get real bad milage, I even think in stock form the turboed versions are more economical

I can easily get 400-550km from a tank out of my stock STI impreza, but a good service would no doubt help, my economy went down recently and I found out the electrodes on the platinum plugs were all but gone

my 1.5l na impreza was shit on gas, so i dont think a 2.5 will be to good

My dad's partner has one, and i couldnt believe how bad it was. No power and the gas range is shit. Also unreliable as hell

Those Japanese fuel consumption figures are never in an ideal scenario and I always add an extra 1l/100km to those figures but even still you should get at least 450km's to 50L on the open road.
Perhaps the cam timing is off a tooth if it's so gutless, maybe you can verify that yourself if you're mechanically minded otherwise like B1NZ said change the plugs, fuel filter etc and pump up your tyres!

A few of my mates have Subarus, all of them have had problems with their fuel filters and also air filter and maf sensor

Well I guess I'll get her to get it serviced to start with. I would do it but seeing as there's no where at her house to work on cars & I wont be in chch again until the end of May. I'll have to let her pay someone to do it

Newer subarus are very good on economy, the likes of single turbo legacys and such.
