boy-racer legislation >> cruising..

Postby heinrich » Mon Nov 30, 2009 10:56 am

Hey guys..

Thought I'd share some information regarding 'boy-reacer legislation' coming into effect at the start of December regarding 'cruising'..

I found a couple of stories (as below) but nothing specific so I fired off an email to Christchurch City Council as follows:

Hi there,

I am in search of some specifics in regards to bylaws regarding 'boy racers' driving repeatedly over the same section of road - specific to Christchurch. I am particularly interested in definitions of 'driving repeatedly' and what locations and times are effected and when these laws will take effect.

After much searching I have found some vague information but all state that the local councils will have the power to pass legislation as per the following:

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/artic ... 475&pnum=1
http://home.nzcity.co.nz/news/article.a ... main,narts
http://www.police.govt.nz/news/release/5134.html

Many thanks,

Heinrich

to which I received the following reply:

i hadnt heard about this till today, sounds like another poorly worded, unneeded, ill-conceived law. i thought we had had a change of government? at least labour doesnt tend to sell off all our assets every chance they get.

whatever happened to education over legislation is what i wanna know

maybe MPs get bonuses for passing laws?

Exactly.. what they need to do is acknowledge that theres people that are into their cars and provide a viable place / organise activities (and not just use the excuse of "they should be going to the track")..

I remember a while back when there was an epidemic like outbreak of skateboarders.. Councils gave them a place to go (all the skateparks) and they virtually dissapeared from the city streets overnight...

Think you might have missed his point there - also i don't recall said skateboarders being out to all hours of the night causing as much noise as boy racers do in normally quiet suburban areas, mostly they stuck around the city centers.

I've contacted the Minister with my complaints about this stupid section of the law around cruising, haven't heard back from her. Needless to say I will be contacting her again. I suggest everyone contacts Judith Collins over it, point out how stupid this section is.

I also pointed out that buses can be done under the law as it is written, and even police cars. Purely due to the bad drafting of the law, anyone can be fined under the act for repeatedly driving on the same stretch of road in a manner that brings attention to the speed or the engine of the vehicle. Any car with a badge on it that says what the size of the engine is breaches the act in its purest definition, a spoiler on the car could be bringing attention to the speed of a car, even the ToySpeed logo on your car could fall foul of the law. This is how draconian it is.

If my local council passes a bylaw to enforce this law on any streets I will be contacting the police on a regular basis to ask that they ticket all the buses, as in Dunedin the busses pretty much all use the main street, and they are often nose to tail, and make a lot of noise taking off. I am really angry at this draconian law, and will use a bit of action as stated above to point out how stupid the law is.

i was meaning that in a more general sense - that is, if the government perceives a problem, their attempts to address it should be based around teaching people WHY its a problem, how it affects them and others, or WTF ever to get people to stop doing it.

if passing laws was all that was needed to stop bad behaviour, we wouldnt be needing to build more jails now would we?

in this specific situation, i was not meaning their education at school per se. that being said, i personally dont see cruising as a problem. as long as it is undertaken in a law abiding and considerate manner. is not often i agree with the folk at NZPC, but happened to read one of their editorials today and he summed it up pretty well - idiots are idiots in or out of their cars. if they cant cruise in their preferred manner they will just find another outlet for their hooliganism!

this social engineering via the passing of laws telling us how to live is just a way to keep our overstaffed parliament busy

If you really want to wind her up start your letter "Dear Fred".

Fred was her nickname at school and dates from a time when in primary school when the teacher was giving a test and showed the class where to put there name by writing "Fred" in the appropriate place, Judith simply followed instructions (as she is probably doing now)
