Importing vehicles under Special Interest

Postby Jet_boy01 » Wed May 26, 2010 10:57 am

I saw a while back (last month) on this forum I think that the quota for special interest vehicles is only half full for this year so far.

Can anyone tell me how I can find out how full the quota is etc?

Anyone registered an imported car under it, anything special I should know?

Basically looking to import an R32 GTR but the 89' ones seem to be selling at a bit of a premium due to their classic car status here so was thinking I could get a 1990 - 1994 one instead for a cheaper price, or same price as an 89 but some decent mods.

Can I easily take the rego off and sell it within 4 years still (un registerable etc)

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers

Not even quarter full.

1989 doesn't need to meet emission rules, or frontal impact, so therefore doesn't need any exemption (SIV) to those two rules.

If you deregister a car, then it doesn't matter what previous exemptions are on the car, because it isn't on the road, so nobody cares. Obviously car deregistered is worth less than registered though.

Watch for usual early 1990's car issues. (rust, worn out bits).

Thanks for the reply Leon, is there anyway I can tell how full it is for future reference?

Am I right in saying that the car doesn't need to meet any frontal impacts or emissions when it is going under special interest or will I have to some work to get it up to those standards?

Will definitely be keeping an eye on rust etc, got a fairly reliable auction agent over there.

1 Ring 0800 108 809 and ask, they will check and tell you

2 Correct, it will not need to meet frontal impact or emissions standard requirements (will still need to not be putting out black smoke, and will need to not have stuff like airbags removed etc)
- subnote: Standards are what cars were built to, testing is making sure that the car is still in decent condition.

3 Yeah those GTR's seem to be getting to an age where it can cost a metric fudgeload to put on the road, as they wear out some really expensive suspension and brake bits. Plus of course the R word.

Is there a way to find out how many cars have been produced? And does this number apply to Model or Submodel only. ie: 10,000 GTRs? or does it include GTS, GTSt etc etc.
