The D4 pump on caldina is more refined than on earlier model (3SFSE in premio). There were problems with these pumps (where car would not start). When you crank from cold it should start like normal car would, if it takes too long the pump most likely is stuffed.

One thing is they are prone to carbon up. Never run it on 91.
With new shape caldinas you are fairly limited, either gutless 1ZZFE, D4, or turbo.

If I didn't want turbo the D4 is only choice (unless you are driving only in town).

When you are looking at one (assuming you are going to buy it private) ask them what fuel it suppose to run (word it as if you don't know, like what they usually they put in it). If they say 91, in my opinion, you should walk away of said vehicle.

I wouldn't buy a D4,
or anything with a lean burn sticker on the rear window.

just checked out the lean burn tech,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lean_burn

No way these cars can do under 6l/100kms.

Caldina with 7AFE does 5.6L/100kms,

early honda civic ETi can do 4.8L/100kms? really?
