Auckland 4A-GE silvertop blacktop GURU

Postby softlad » Fri Mar 04, 2011 8:03 pm

Who in Auckland would be classed as a bit of a Guru when it comes to 4A-GE silver top Apex GT engines.
I am requiring experience and sharing of knowledge to assist me in sorting my 92 Levin Apex GT?
I am completely new to Toyotas having been into VW mk2 Golfs and like to learn stuff about different cars.

The four seasons in Australia consist of "$&#$% it's hot", "Can you believe how $&#$% hot it is?", "I won't be in today because it is too $&#$% hot" and "Yes, the dinner plate size spiders come inside to escape from the heat."

Yeah currently approx 45,000* people on here are running 4ages, so if you use the search function up top, and check out the FAQ section you will find almost everything there is to know about them.

*May or may not be accurate... at all

Are you having hesitation problems still? Have you run ECU codes? That would be a good place to start. I'm continually amazed at the amount of people who would rather replace parts by guesswork than learn to pull ECU codes and have the car tell them exactly what is wrong with it.

Your hesitation though.. pull the plug off the O2 sensor underneath the car, leave the battery terminals off for 10min then reconnect them and take it for a drive, leaving the 02 sensor unplugged, see if that makes a noticeable difference. If not, reconnect the 02 sensor and disconnect/reconnect the battery, take it for a decent drive then pull the codes.

The water problem you have around the spark lead will not cause the hesitation.. if it were that bad, it would short out the lead and the car would sound like a Subaru.

Yeah, as Dell'Orto said above the silvertop AFM incorporates the IAT sensor as well as the MAF sensor. So thereby replacing the AFM unit you'd sort both those codes. Try borrow one first if you can.. see if it makes a noticeable difference before spending coin on another one. And remember to disconnect/wait 10min/reconnect the battery after any changes.

BTW I've come across a LOT of 4AGEs with hesitation problems off idle or on application of throttle, so don't go all out spending large trying to get it perfect because IMO its' not really worth it.

Replaced the AFM and the plug lead on cylinder 3. I think the collecting moisture around cylinder 3 plug & plug lead was due to the misfire, as a result of condensation from the nonexistant firing on plug 3 and the latent heat off the surrounding engine.
This solved the hesitation problem and the misfire and it has been a joy to drive since it was fixed, until Thursday when I put it into 3rd with not enough engine speed in town, it felt like something popped or let go or even another singular mis fire, but now at low revs it hessitates again, idles really rough and from the smell seems to be over fueling at low rpm, however, once up to 100kmph it runs fine?????

Any suggestions from someone in the know.
I have tryed to get another error code reading but the engine light flashes continually when it should be flashing the code out?

Continual flashes are the 'all ok' code. Sounds very odd.. :?

I've disconected the battery for the day to reset everything so will see what happens next.
Over fueling at low rpm is the cold start temp switch isn't it or something to do with that sort of thing?
