Yeap.

Best way to avoid getting pinged is to stick to the speed limit.

The voice is encrypted communications, so you can't tell what they're talking about.
Police radar isn't encrypted, its just RF in some form or another, C band, KU, etc. Whatever flavour they are using. But its only measuring distance from one point to another and sampling the return times to calculate your speed.

The police car radars and the hand-held lasers both use Ka band. The speed camera vans use K band. X band is no longer in use for any police cars or radar guns in NZ, so if X band goes off it will either be a security camera or an automatic opening door etc.

I don't know about that. Some of the new lasers Police are using are good up to at least 280-ish.

Laser uses laser.... not Ka band.
So if you have a radar detector that can pick up laser. All it does it tell you that policeman has pointed his laser at you and pulled the trigger.

Look at Tech Info here:

Which means they probably already have your speed. As soon as the finger is off the laser trigger, the speed is automatically locked. Seems to kinda defy the point of a laser detector to me.

thus why they make laser jammers, which work quite well I'm told

Aren't they illegal though? I know radar jammers are.

Not yet but there is legislation that bans laser jammers (but not laser/radar detectors) in the works. And the ones that work are very expensive. Top of the line laser detectors do pick up beam scatter sometimes, but not often enough to be relied on.

The new digital speed cameras are on k band and can't be reliably detected, especially in urban areas, you might get a hundred metres or so in the country, if you are lucky, with a top of the line detector.

The patrol car mounted stalkers are on ka wideband (34.7) and are easy to detect except when used by cunning operators in instant on mode.

haha thanks guys for all your advise. Personally I'd rather stick to the limit then try to out run the laser LOL. Reasons are 1stly I would kill myself if I try, 2ndly my car doesn't go that fast....:(

I heard you can get intelligent radar jammers that are capable of sending back a signal to the device to tell them a fake speed. Not sure if there is any truth to that or not.

referring to the physics of radar speed traps this is probably not true. I could be wrong though
