Insurance who should I call?

Postby dnalunchie » Thu Apr 07, 2011 1:37 pm

Hey all, it has come time to renew my new insurance and I think I'm paying too much.

Its an 1987 Suzuki swift. They want 350 per year for standard 3rd party (no theft or fire or anything)

I'm with state.

Anyone suggest anyone I should call?

$&#$% thats expensive… ring them first and ask why so much. Surely it should only be around $150 max for that. Last 3rd party I had was $144 for fire, theft & glass honda accord insured for $1500. Hell I pay not much more than what you're paying for full cover at 7.5k with lowered excess on the SC AW11 and under 25. I'm with AMI.

Ghostbusters...

I'm with AMI and find them to be pretty good. Plus they need all the money they can get at the moment (so if you do go the AMI route, make sure you don't crash and push them into bankruptcy).

$350 sounds reasonable though - that said I haven't held a 3rd party insurance policy for 8 years.

I also hate State - they try to worm their way out of anything.

All insurance companies will try to worm out of things.

Im with ami and my twin turbo legacy is costing me $400 a year full cover. I did have to get a 5 star alarm though. Although i have been with ami for well over 10 years with full no claims discount.

Nah State are the worst! Dealt with them for years when at Toyota and they are the worst for dodgy repairs and parts.

Lunchie, you are getting shafted! While I am over 25, I pay that much for 2 cars! One 2000 Corolla at $4500 and one Chevette on Classic insurance for $2500

The 330 PA was for my contents insurance.

I was with State for third party, but when they hiked the prices upwards to about $190 or so a year, I did some phone calls.

Now I'm third party with AMI for I think around $90 per year.

Just got a quote from Classic Cover Insurance for my Starlet with all mods listed and there is a huge list. Full cover for $315 per year includes unlimited windscreens.

Cheaper than my current insurance cover for the starlet (through ASB with no claims bonus, alarm discount and package deal discount) as a standard car (mods have just been completed) and I anticipate when I speak to them tonight they will tell me to get F*#%ed

Granted I am over 25 and a female, but even when I was under 25 I never paid more than $350 for full insurance.

$100 PA for 3rd party for my Landcruiser but they don't do theft cover unless it is in a garage while at home. (it doesn't even get under the door  )

I'm looking at changing soon though, need theft cover. Need theft cover after having a car stolen, one of those 'never thought it would happen to me' things.

Also if you go with AMI, make sure you find out how much their listed value for you car is. I asked them out of interest and it was at most, a third of how much they go for.

My other car got hit by a guy on a motorbike who was going up the middle of two lanes. Nice big dent but his insurance (State) have said they will pay for it. I'm looking for a place to get a quote now because the State person said I could go where ever I like, which is good. Guess I'll see how it goes though.

You're a worry, matching shoes today or did you get that wrong too?

Mrs pays ~$150 for fire/theft/glass so with you being a male (I know what they say about assumptions.... but i'll take the chance), its probably a pretty standard price around that mark for a low value car.

Still from another perspective you could understand how it is fair enough for the govt to bail them out

My point is that if the Govt doesn't bail them out then there is one less insurance company out there to offer competition and also the loss of jobs
