Anyone know this car?

Postby KwS » Mon Jun 13, 2011 10:02 pm

Hi guys,

Looking at getting this SW, and need some help.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =382809648

Basically, does anyone know this car or the owner? Just want to know some history and make sure its all good.

Only thing the owner has said that puts me off a little, is occasionally itll puff a little blue smoke out when coming on boost. He claims STM said it was nothing to worry about.... so should i be?

Thanks all!

I would also be a bit worried about the rusty coolant explosion onto the inside of the engine lid

That would be the car my p/plate originally came off (MR2PWR). Was owned by Bonita down in chch, from what i remember it was basicaly stock, with a piggyback, extra injector and TD06 turbo. Which was probably why it blew up

Last i knew it was bought by one of the VR4 guys (Ako), which he was going to rebuild but who knows what happened after that. Has been round for quite a few years now.

Yeah the current owner had the engine replaced with a lower K standard one. Its also had a plug in link G4 installed and tuned, along with the other mods listed.

I did wonder about that coolant explosion, but who knows how old that is? Doesnt use any coolant apparently.

Its definitely "Ako"s old car. His last posts are in 2007, so dont really know what happened to the car since then.

Sounds like it'd be a real beast, but maybe not what im after for a reliable but fast daily.

That car is cursed  Bonita had huge dramas with it but that's mostly due to the dodgy setup it came in from Japan with. In all honesty, it looks like someone's put a bit of effort into making reliable again but if I was looking personally, it would be hard to ignore it's history.

if its got a TD06 and is running 15psi, where is the power????? its barely making more power than a factory GT-T

HDJ81- 112AWKW @ 10psi), FC3S (Tarmac Spec 335rwhp@11psi), 3SGTE stroker - replacement body found.

That too is something i was wondering about. Would be keen to see the dyno plot. My old B18CR Type R made more power off a TD05H at 10psi.

I see it parked by the Westpac Stadium in the Toll Translink carpark. I don't really like the pink pearl on the red paint. I don't know anything about the car though.

im not a huge fan of the paint, but i do love MR2s (would prefer AW but they becoming hard to get good ones), and having a lot of work done, including the link, makes it very attractive to me.

Twin plate clutch, as a daily, in wellington... am i suicidal?

Spoiler removed, pearl in clear, primered patches, black roof, the wheels. That would probably put me off more than the clutch. Depends what you can get the car for, and what you want to spend on it to make it into what you want out of a car.

Geeze man $7k spent at Speedtech. That's a serious investment into a 92 MR2.

my 5sgte with a TD05H with TD06 compressor made more power at all 4 wheels than it is making..........

Putting a big turbo on a motor which isn't particularly high flowing and basically asking it to do what a stock turbo can do (ie, flowing sufficient air for a stock 3SGTE at 15psi) isn't going to magically result in higher power.

If it was running 20-22psi (or had some bigger cams/headwork) then the upgraded turbo might start proving its worth a bit more - those options are there for a new owner in the form of a job part done :)

But when you hit the vtackz the head gives a lot more flow than a 3S-GTE. PSI is not a rating of flow.

And I don't see any mention of injector upgrades, so I doubt it even have more than 265hp TBH.

and what's with the black roof, this ain't a 180SX, nor a NSX-R.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

yeah yeah, i know, average example.

Asked seller about the coolant thing, apparently its from when the old engine let go, he just hasnt got around to cleaning it off.

Getting the feeling i should just steer clear of this, as it could be a ticking time bomb.
