4WDs: Petrol vs Diesel

Postby Boosted_162 » Sat Sep 10, 2011 10:58 pm

Now ive been wondering this for a while. Im (still) looking to upgrade my terrano to a newer one, and petrol ones seem to be so much cheaper. So what have people found the difference to be running a petrol 4WD instead of diesel one? Obviously there is the price difference + RUC, but whats the fuel economy REALLY like between the 2 fuels?

Ill be going for either a TD27T/QD32T diesel or a VG33DE petrol, probably auto.

Daniel, aka redmist bought a petrol one based on the fact they are cheaper to BUY. After running it down to Dunedin and back towing a trailor he feels like he made up for the price difference in fuel on that one trip. I dont know much about them, but I do know that diesel is much more efficient on heavy vechicles.

They chew through the petrol Craig. Diesel is the way to go for heavy vehicles. May aswell get a V8 disco if you're looking for a fuel bill

having watched a friend drop a fairly large amount of money into an Isuzu diesel something (Bighorn?) chasing overheating, I'd suggest unless you're knowledgable about the diesels, get somebody to do a really good check over of the mechanical bits before you drop the coin.

I'm relatively comfortable with looking at petrol cars, but I'd be so naive looking at a diesel that I could be sold a total pup and never know it 8)

Definately agree with you on this one. I have learnt a bit with my current terrano (early TD27T), but compared to petrols i get lost quite easily! So will definately be dragging someone with me that knows diesels

Why do people get over whelmed by diesels? They are much simpler than petrols. They require 2 things to run, are and fuel. Older diesels dont even need electronics. The cooling system is the same as a petrol, radiator, coolant galeries, a pump, and a temp controller (thermostat).

Diesels up to about 15 years ago didnt even have anything remotely EGR (etc) on it, yet petrols have had it for much longer.

Diesels are simple.

For me i find its just im so used to petrol cars. I can understand most bits, but stuff like diesel pumps are completely new to me (current truck is my first diesel, had 9 months or so). Im sure they are very simple, but im just cautious if i really dont know about them

Nah wont be spending that much, will be looking at mid 90's (so R50 Terrano and maybe KZN185 Surf, so no common rails). Pretty much set on a R50 with QD32T if i can find one for the right money.

R50 with QD32T FTW

They go really well, no major probs with them. Injector pumps have been leaking quite a bit lately with the change of fuel, just make sure its dry when you look at the ute

I preferred parents petrol Terrano over there diesel one, it certainly got up and boogied! You could even watch the fuel gauge boogie  The R50's are pretty sweet though, am currently trying to borrow one as a daily for the awesome quake damaged roads down here :?

I had a MWB 70 series Landcruiser with a petrol 3.8L holden V6 auto.

I used $120 in petrol to drive to a camping location and did some offroading and back home again.

Now I have another MWB 70 series Landcruiser but is Diesel and Manual, did the same trip with more km offroad and used about $60 diesel all up!

Of course RUC comes into it but it'd still be about a 30:70 comparison.

Its now a turbo diesel and uses even less fuel because I don't need to have my foot flat all the time
