2000 corolla fielder Z...

Postby doin donuts » Mon Oct 03, 2011 8:58 am

Hey all,my wife has got a Nissan prairie 7 seater thing that she decided would be a good idea to have with all the kids we were going to have but after a really traumatic second birth( I nearly lost my wife and son at the same time) Iv told her no more kids so we are wanting to get rid of the Nissan and have been offered a 2000 corolla fielder Z,it's got 168ks and looks tidy as,does anyone know anything about these cars that would make me keep away from them and is it a good trade?the Nissan has 93ks and is a 2003,I know there's a few years and alot of k's difference but thinking about asking cash too

we service a few fleet versions here, they seem pretty solid. done a few radiators around 200k, but thats not so surprising. seen a few cam chain tensioners leaking too, but thats a fairly easy fix. thats about all i can think of at the moment. the cars in question belong to a security company and his guys absolutely trash them, but they seem to take it pretty well.

i think all his have the 1.5 (1NZ engine?)

we did have one private one that needed a couple of CVs.

keep up with your servicing and it'll be mint

Work out the rate of depreciation on the Nissan and then do the same for the fielder, in fact scrub that have a look at the silly money people are still getting for carib BZ-T's

I bought the wife a 2001 fielder Z two years ago, paid $10,250 for it, was the cheapest/best condition i could find, these days the bloody things are going for the same money, over the same period of time my other car has probably lost $3k in value

Things going for them (as a family car)

Handle well (even standard)
Relatively peppy
Boot is reasonably sizeable
Rear windows wind fully down (very important to little kids I discovered lol)
Still look modern and stylish, park it next to a base spec and they look sporty, park it at the shopping mall and its just another corolla = low theft risk

After having a quick look on TM, there is a kazillion 2003 libertys for sale and there is only a few Z's, if it is mechanically sound the km's is probably no big deal, is it worth arguing over cash difference, maybe but even at a straight swap you are probably gettign the better deal longer term

Drive belt tensioner also fails from time to time but that's no major. Just something to look for when looking at one, might enable you to talk em down a little.

And don't forget the VTAX bolt failure issue on pre 02's

$5 fix if you catch it in time though

Auto, or manual?

Might be a bit "meh" with the rev happy engine + killjoy auto.

Tiptronic but it doesn't matter about not being racer etc as it's for my wife to take our 3 year old and 3 month old out and about

The wife had to have a auto and yes it sucks balls compared to the manual but in their own right they are still a good car

The TS bandwagon harp on about the the non lift engine being a better match for the auto and maybe it is but the auto Z is a damn good car lacking nothing in driveability.

If nothing else i would always recommend the Z spec as it has the creature comforts standard that make a difference (6 speaker stereo, sports seats, body kit, privacy glass, silver dash highlights etc)

I have a BZT auto wagon, and frankly it makes me want to kill myself by driving off a cliff due to the combination of peaky engine with auto.

My 4AF Corolla kick's the BZT to the kerb for daily driver duties.

Thus BZT, it is getting manualised :D

The Z gets you the VVTi-L (as opposed to the VVTi on the X), plus most of them come with factory body kits.

We have a manual corolla Z (love it), and a friend has the auto Z fielder. He bought it for his wife but now drives it more than her because he likes it so much :)

The key 2000~2003 'Z' features are the sports front seats, sports steering wheel with tiptronic on s/wheel (if auto :P), silver centre console and door switch panels, colour coded roof racks, orange instrument illumination, tweeters on mirror sails, climate control AC, tinted windows (except on front doors), body kit

You can get climate and body kit on some S models too. they are not that much or that differently spec'ed but as a overall package they will commute nicely but if you needed to do a long distance run you will better enjoy the 'Z' experience even in auto guise

I used to have a 6spd BZ-T and I can see how a auto would be a total killjoy, the 2ZZ is nowhere near as peaky

Negative, not all Zs have colour coded dash/console - I think it was an option depending on the exterior colour? I'd recommend getting one without if possible as they look naff when the paint gets chipped/worn.

Lol sounds like me  I lent my mondeo to the bro in law for a few months and drive the fielder and even auto i enjoy it, i tend to use the tiptronic in twisties or heavy traffic as it is a bit indecisive but very liveable

I will happily go on record to say that if i blow the auto up i will be dong a manual conversion and then buying the wife another car lol

so is it 1ZZFE 1.8 or 1nzfe 1.5 ? have to thrash the crap out of the 1.5 as they are pretty gutless below 4000rpm. but go ok for a 1.5 in a fairly heavy body, if keep revs up. 5th gear is totally useless in my current one. probably have engaged 5th about 3 times 80k.. would be horrible as an auto. the 1.8's have alot wider powerband. would be ok auto.

these are the base spec models not fielder tho

It's a 1.8. I'm going to take one for a test drive this week so I will know what it's like.

AFAIK there was a lower spec runx Z that came without bodykit or colour coding but fielders all came with silver dash until the facelift with the blacky marbley finish

Try to test drive a 1.8 S Touring afterwards if you could. Used to own a 1.6 Carib BZT 6 speed manual myself, driving a 1.8 Fielder S Touring auto, the Fielder S has so much more torque and real easy to drive.

Fuel consumption of the S Touring is amazing and the Z Touring just can't match it  . Been running on 91 with 14.9km/l for over half a year now! Around 200km at 50km/h zone and the rest at 100km/h zone.
