Bringing a car in from Australia

Postby diss7 » Wed Oct 05, 2011 12:58 pm

Any tips/advice on bringing my cars home? Moving home to Chch in the next few months and want to bring at least the te27.

Would like to be able to register the car for street use, obviously.

Thanks.

A car as old as the TE27 will be relatively straightforward, as it is old enough such that there are basically no "vehicle standards" that need to be checked. So largely inspection needed.

If it's anything 1990 or newer, there are more requirements, and frankly you're better of selling there, bringing the money here, and buying something better and cheaper here anyway

http://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicle/importing/index.html

Contact these guys, and find out who does entry certification work where you are arriving to. email that branch, and get a feeling if they're the sort of people you want to work with.

Entry certifiers
All motor vehicles entering New Zealand must pass an entry certification inspection before they can be registered for use on New Zealand roads. To arrange for this inspection you need to contact an approved entry certifier.

The organisations below carry out entry certification of imported used vehicles and 'parallel imports', ie new vehicles that are imported by persons other than the manufacturers' representatives:

Automobile Association (AA), phone +64 9 966 8800, free phone 0800 500 333 option 5, fax +64 9 966 8893, email aatech@aa.co.nz
Vehicle Inspection New Zealand (VINZ), phone +64 9 580 3170, fax +64 9 525 8910, email info@vinz.co.nz
Vehicle Testing New Zealand (VTNZ), phone +64 4 495 2500, fax +64 4 495 2530, email technical@vtnz.co.nz

actually you can get all kinds of shit on the road here still, provided you meet certain criteria - essentially its sort of a migrant type exemption for cars that are for personal use. you'll have to prove that its been in your name X length of time before bringing it here (i think its around 12 months) and probably have to keep it in your name here for a certain period also.

but defintiely check out your options with the relevant authorities. my boss still does a bit of compliance related stuff, if you are planning to bring them into auckland and would like to chat to him PM me for his number / email

Please message me for my cell number.!!!

I just brought 2 of my cars from aussie to nz.. its not simple or easy but I have contacts who can save you $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

1) shipping should cost between 1800-2100
2) car will FAIL maf, its a given, allow 580ish for cleaning
3) Jess transport offers a great deal from shippers to VINZ/AA or other certification place of $45.
4) Sign the customs form at NZ customs saying you wont sell car for 2 year or you have to pay duty..

(Have you owner car for over 21 months?)

5)Get the M42a form from vinz, rego it and drive it away!

Yes it is called Immigrant vehicles. You must have been overseas for 21 months, you must have had the car registered in your name for 12 months, and you can't sell the car on for 12 months once complied.

However, chances are that you're best to check to make sure if the car you own now isn't worth half that value here :)

yeah that'd be the biggest reason not to do it i would have thought. we've complied cars that probably cost more to ship and comply than they would have cost to buy here in NZ, but were still worth 10k or whatever in aus

True, but if we only did stuff to our cars on the basis that increased their value (or at least reduced their decline in price), there would be a whole bunch of project/difficult to find cars what wouldn't be around... and if you find a nice example, put x hours into it, what are the chances that you could get another one like it or better? :?

the te27 is a no brainer to bring back, but he mentioned multiple cars. obviously it depends what they are, but if its commonly available here chances are it'll be cheaper

Thanks for the advice.

Looks like I'll only bring the trueno back. Hopefully the odd person will know what it is in Chch. Everyone here either thinks its a rotary or a monaro.

Just looking into this a bit more now.

I've been overseas for more than 21 months, but have not owned the car for 12 months. I'm only looking to bring the te27 back.

I was thinking about whether to just bring a 20ft container back with the car and all my personal effects that I would otherwise just sell. Has anyone brought a car in this way?

It doesn't bother me too much if I can't drive the car for awhile back in NZ while I get it registered; its not my daily anyway.

I'm still a little torn as to whether to keep it. I've been offered $25k here for it, (whether the guy had the money or not I'm not sure) which at todays forex rate is over $32k NZD. But, there isn't another car I could buy for $30k that I would rather have.

Keep it, you will regret selling it!

I doubt you will have any issues registering it. It meets the criteria for a special vehicle. I think it will be a pretty straight forward thing to bring it in.
Best thing is to contact the relevant department here now and give them the details and see what they say.

If it's a 1989 or older car, it doesn't need to meet emissions etc, so it's a walk in the park. You don't need to worry about Immigrant Vehicle criteria

When you say relevant department, how do you mean? The AA?

Perhaps just ringing a shipping compay would be easiest as they will no doubt know what else I need to do.
