Guy who I've seen at a few swap meets has them for all sorts of cars. We tend to be pretty slack about that kind of thing over here. Hardest bit will be getting dies to match the factory stamping.

Will heck the legality of that when I get to work. Pretty sure you can't use them. Buying them doesn't sound like a problem though.

I bet less than 1 out of 10 people check the tags chassis/engine # when they buy a s/h car.

I looked at a Honda Civic that had blatantly been re-identified. Butchered firewall, body tag attached with mismatched screws, wrong original shell colour, wrong engine, wrong fuel system, wrong interior, wrong brakes, wrong extras, had mysteriously gained 70,000km in three weeks.

Lady who owned the car was not a happy camper when I pointed out that her car had been re-identified.

Likewise years ago at Toyota the guy who had bought a ST185 off a dealer when I pointed out the ST183 numbers in the firewall.

I don't see why there is a problem or illegal to just replace the old oxidized and scratched tag with a new one provided that you copy exactly the same info from the old one to new one.

because the second you mess with the vehicle identifiers, how do you then prove (as in, in a court of law in front of a judge prove) that the vehicle is actually the vehicle that you allege it to be?

The chassis tag is one part of that, and in some cars, is the only source of identification.

Thus, if you get caught, you may find yourself in some difficulties.

Reproduction chassis tags are commonplace among classic and vintage restorers.

You've been able to buy repro small Ford chassis tags and associated dies for ages, for example. Through legit companies even.

won't stop you getting your car banned off the road if you get caught with a repro that makes an inspector think you're dodgy.

I don't really care overly much, and I know about the repro tags etc, BUT I'm just putting forward the black and white "This is the LAW BITCH" point of view, cos that's the sort of thing that I do.

Well not sure about others but if it's me then I'll photo and video document the whole change over process in front of a lawyer (my missus). As long as you're not doing anything dodgy there is nothing to be afraid of, provided the new tag is a exact copy of the old tag, keep the old tag safe for proof, vin number matching the stamped ones on firewall and provided the firewall hasn't been tampered with in anyway then bring on the court and judge.

If you don't have the old tag or the firewall vin is dodgy then that's whole different story.

Seller Comment: Relisted as trademe removed my auctions due to their own mistakes, cheers.

If the auction doesn't get pulled again then looks like he won the argument with Trademe
