Thoughts on 3rd Gen Caldinas...

Postby peas » Sat Oct 15, 2011 1:34 pm

Hey all,

My little Bro is looking at getting one of these for his fiance. She's got a AE110 Levin a present but they want something a bit bigger and newer.

I initially advised him against getting the 2.0l due to the direct injection which I am led to believe can cause issues. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about them (similar issues to Mitsi's GDI??) Does the 1ZZ move these along okay? it has a few more horses than her Levin (being a 4A-FE) but I would imagine that it weighs a bit more too. Anything specific to these cars to look at?

1ZZFE caldina is a bit gutless, 4AFE in AE111 feels a lot better.
But if it is AE110, then it should have 5AFE which is 1.5L and little bit down on power.

I don't know much about them, but I reckon they look awesome.

Just a real shame they didn't come with a manual transmission, otherwise I'd be considering one for my next car.

A friend of mine has one (not sure which version - na though) can't say I've heard anything negative from him.

I havent driven the turbo ones, but the standard ones are nice cars to drive. No rocket ship, but nice for a wifey to drive

If you do get one of the DI's make sure you get a mech warranty for it as the injectors crap themselves...and the last one I got a quote for was $1300-$1600 each 8O (dont know if thats changed now as that was over a year ago)

Driven turbo one, the gearing is all out of whack (but maybe because it is auto?), IMO Legacy of same heritage is nicer vehicle to drive.

...And he got a Legacy. Thanks for the input... I am actually looking at them for my next car but that's a way down the track yet.
