98 Near Masterton?

Postby sergei » Mon Feb 18, 2013 10:38 pm

It looks like they no longer sell 98 at BP in Masterton (the site says it does, which is a lie)... What is the closest station to sell 98 near Masterton, within 100km radius? I will settle for gullforce10 if I have to....

Other the the Gull the next closest 98 is palmy or Lower Hutt. None of the Mobils sell 98 that i'm aware of.

They had signs up in the BP saying they were doing away with 98 at the end of January. Hasnt been a very popular decision locally.

There is a shortage of 98. Some stations in Christchurch are doing away with it all together.

$&#$% that. Yeah I noticed a BP going back to 95 in Auckland.

That's $&#$% , I wipe off up to 12 degrees of timing in some sectors of my map and still got higher knock counts everywhere, cant even run more than 0.6bar of boost without retardation

$&#$% 95

It sounds like a great time to market an octane booster that has reliable, repeatable, consistent, and measured results, as I cant see too many people wanting to dyno/retune their engines because of this.

Luckily mine was tuned on 95, but lots wont have that luxury

well my car is tuned to e85 and bp98 there is no e85 in chch and if they get rid of 98 its a retune only got it tuned again a few weeks ago.

there is another supra owner in chch that has his tuned for a specific amount of 95 + 1 bottle of newlon octane booster netted him better results than pump runs 26-27psi with it

or the other side 95 + water meth although when I thought of this every tuner didn't want a bar of it basicly saying run better fuel than adding another item inline that can fail.

Another option I was given was making a e30 blend myself

but the making own e30/using octane booster/water meth seemed like a hassle thats why I went for dual maps and later will add in a flex fuel sensor to make it even easier so I dont have to dump fuel to swap tunes

if 98 does go will have to get a 95 tune flex fuel sensor and just though some ethanol in when I want to have fun

Challenge at the Waimak here has avgas on pump. No need for licence, just fill into containers was $3 a litre last time I bought some.

here what BP has to say:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting BP.

BP has insufficient supply to meet current forecast demands and action had to be taken in order to prevent a nationwide stock out.

We understand that BP Ultimate 98 is a very popular product with our customers and we have taken a proactive approach to ensure we can continue to keep supplying to our customers where we can.

Due to this, BP has selected 13 sites nationwide where BP Ulitmate 98 will be removed and replaced with Premium 95.

We appreciate your feedback and can advise that the BP Website will be updated as soon as possible with relevant information.

as for Masterton I filled with gullforce, I felt no difference in performance or fuel economy, at least my STI can tolerate it ok. Now I am in Nelson and the closest source of 98 is in Bleinheim :(

This is the way to go I reckon, if it is an option - you end up with a reasonable amount of ethanol left in the tank most of the time if you occasionally put some E85 in there.... even E10-E20 gives pretty impressive gains and doesn't come at a huge cost to fuel economy.

octane booster is expensive for what you get, i dont know if you can use more than 1 bottle at a time or what, but octane booster barely good enough to raise 1 degree of timing, if your tune is on edge and sometimes you get knock, a bottle of octane booster will see you through

i got this problem myself, i managed to make it work on gull force 10 by blanketing my 98 map with 3.5% fuel 1.035* and i get some pretty good results, i max my injectors quicker but i get more power at lower boost levels.

its hard to know how much advance i can add if any, knock counts aren't significantly lower than 98 to justify adding any, they are lower by approx 2-3 counts but 1 degree of timing affects about 4-5 counts

because 98 and e10 can run the same ign timing, if your ecu can support it, wideband o2 feedback for 98 basemap + a possible 4% increase would be the go.

here is a comparison, BP98 on top, E10 on the bottom.
E10 using same ignition timing, fuel map + 3.5% blanket

Just a quick one here doesn't that Mobil Synergy 8000 have a blend of ethanol in it???

Not 100% sure but I'm sure it runs something else in it outside of the advertised 97.5 RON it advertises.
