st215 turbo fwd?

Postby Grrrrrrr! » Sun Apr 06, 2014 10:14 am

Has anyone ever seen a st215 with factory 3sgte and 5spd fwd ( e153)

A guy on another forum is claiming that he has bought several of these but I can not find them listed on toyodiy, and I've never heard of a fwd caldina turbo. Same guy also claims gen4 3sgte rods are good for 400hp...

I have seen a couple of turbo/manual Caldinas go through Turners damaged when I have been looking around for parts. So yes they do exist. They normally go for a little bit more than what I have in the budget tho.

But were they FWD? Plenty of turbo manual 4wd Gt-ts around, but never seen or heard of a FWD one.

Sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one: The guy on the other forum is full of shit.

My thoughts exactly, I can find no such beast in toyodiy, but just checking to make sure, because sourcing a late model low kms e153 with triple cone synchros + lsd would be good, and caldinas are way more common than gen3+ mr2s.

however on the other side of the arguement there are people selling them.. http://www.jdmenginedepot.com/jdm_engine_details/236/Toyota_3S-GTE_Caldina_ST215_4TH_GEN_Engine,_Manual_FWD_Transmission,_Harness,_&_ECU_JDM_3SGTE, and that is not an mr2 gearbox, the linkages and clutch line mark it as setup for FWD. I was wondering if they are the 4wd box with the transfer case removed and a blanking plate installed, but that seems like a lot of work for an engine importer to do.

This. The importer may have just had a FWD box from a late model 3SGE Celica, or it might have come from a converted car. Then again, I have been surprised before.. found out recently that they make the 140kW RunX Z in a 2dr version! Certainly not something I've ever seen in NZ, overseas manufacturers seem to make quite a few "better" versions of the jap imports we get.

I was going to suggest it might be some weird import going by a different name to Caldina.
Plenty of weird toyota's in Japan's fleet that don't appear here.

its common for yahoo's to blow the boxes doing mad heli's, and then not being able to find or afford the right replacement parts, and just chucking in a FWD box and removing the AWD parts, but that always leaves behind the likes of the rear AWD hubs and stuff behind, so you know a dodgy conversion when you get underneath it for a nosey

but ive never heard of a factory FWD 3S-GTE ST215 before, like its been said above, the guy could easily be talking arse

Thought about calling BS, but cbf with butting heads with him again after the gen4 rods are shit debate.. apparently in the US of A gen4 3sgtes don't bend rods. Only chased it up on here since low milage e153s are a rare commodity, and I seem to remember it cost Chelles about $1500 to get hers rebuilt with IIRC, some new bearings but no other new parts.. and was 10? years ago.

Presumably these are imported engines from Japan? (i.e. the Caldina wasn't sold new in the USA?) If so, then surely our knowledge of JDM stuff would give a better idea than their (relatively) less exposure to JDM models and options?
Ask him where the engines/trans are coming from in case there was another market which got these odd combos.
