Trip to Japan. What car places to see?

Postby GDII » Sat Apr 25, 2015 8:44 pm

The wife and I are planning a trip to Japan for our honeymoon. We have places we both want to go but I want to go see and do a few car things while I'm there.

Museums sound good. Toyota mega web looks interesting. Are there any of the race tracks that have hot laps where you pay to be taken around the track in a car? Hopefully not a prius except for the V8 powered super GT one maybe.
I want to hit up Up Garage to have a look for cheap car bits too. There must be something for the MR2 in one of the many shops throughout the country.

Any suggestions would be great. It doesn't have to be a long the lines of what I've described but being car related would be best. We have most of the other bits sorted.

Hit up Essdub on the MR2 forums, him and a couple of his mates did Japan after WTAC year before last.

Toyota Automotive Mueseum in Nagoya is pretty good - you ride the Maglev train to get to it. Toyota also does factory tours, but you'll need to book a place in advance (they do them in English too) - google it! There is a lot of Up Garages all around - so it doesn't really matter which one you go to. Ummmm Super Autobacs Nagoya is pretty renowned as a cool place - it's a bit off the beaten track so you'll have to do a bit of walking from the nearest subway. If you're in Yokohama you could also check out the Nismo Museum in Omori.

If I were to trip to Japan, walking about the old streets of Kyoto, and travelling from town to town in the mountains would be top of my list. If I had time, I would visit Yakushima Forest, also, and perhaps the remote north.

Good suggestions. The Nismo museum would be something I'd like to see.

We will be doing similar stuff but probably not heading over to Yakushima. Looks like a nice place to go though.

+1 for the Toyota museum in Nagoya. Awesome

The Mega Web in Tokyo is worth a look, when we were there they had JTGP supra's sitting there. Man that was a tight squeeze trying to fit inside that thing
Massive ferris wheel aswell which will be so nice since your there with your beloved

We also did a day trip from tokyo via train to Hakone, there's a massive cable car that takes you into the mountains with views of Mt Fuji (on a good day)
Then got the bus back to the train station through all the super twisty mountain roads that have those nasty center mounted road spikes to stop the street drifters

Thanks for all the responses guys. I went to quite a few places and had a great time.
See my project thread for a write up on what I did and where I went.
