WOF inspection questions

Postby RAZA » Fri Nov 04, 2016 8:30 am

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone with a definite understanding of wof rules can help answer a couple of questions I have.

My girlfriend took her car for a wof the other day and the guy has failed her on a broken fog light and a cracked drive belt.

She text me when she was still there so I asked her to get the guy to show her the "drive belt" and he's pointed out to her the alternator belt. When she's got home I've had a look at it and there are a few little cracks in it but nothing major. It's done about 50,000km and I'd say it's got at least that in it again. Also had a look at the fog light and it has a crack in the lens, but this doesn't seem to be affecting it's performance at all - it's a clear white lens which has a crack across it, still water tight, and still working as usual - in fact while it's on you'd have a hard time noticing the crack.

So two questions:

1 - is an alternator belt a wof item? Doesn't seem very safety focused to me. what if under the covers it also goes around the powersteering pump - is it an issue then?
2 - I understand a fog light failing if it's not working - but should a crack in a lens which doesn't appear to affect its performance fail it?

Of course the guy offered to change these for her at the workshop, seems a bit like he is trying to drum up work for himself...

WOF places have got very tough on cracks in lights over the last couple of years. Same thing happened to me with a brake light, still worked, was only a crack, but failed. I would suggest looking for a replacement light a Pick a part etc. They are normally pretty easy to swap over.

Not sure about the belt though.

The belt fail will be because it also drives the power steering.

Fog light - http://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/v ... -fog-lamps

Drive belt - http://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/v ... on-systems

They're both cheap fixes, I'd call that a win. Last wof on my RunX cost me a steering rack rebuild.
