They tried to change Hamilton to "Waikato city" a few years ago. Seeing as the name hasn't changed I think that idea burned.
Maybe the whole idea is to try and identify more Maori within NZ. Same as them changing Mt Egmont to Mt Taranaki.
Either way, Palmy will still be Palmy to me.

Not that I know of. Whanganui is the name of the river that runs through Wanganui.
